Bills Give Game Away To Chiefs

Gameday Grades: The defense gave up no touchdowns and six points, three of those after the offense turned it over on downs. The offense did put up their best numbers in the season but three big turnovers was easily the difference in this one. Gameday Grades.

Bills Lose 23-13: The Chiefs are undefeated because they force turnovers and score off of them. The Bills made it easy for them to accomplish those goals. The stifling Kansas City defense scored two touchdowns off of turnovers as the Chiefs remain undefeated with a 23-13 win over the Bills in front of a less than whiteout crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills dominated this game in almost every phase before Jeff Tuel had an interception returned 100 yards to tie the game at 10 in the third quarter. T.J. Graham than got stripped of the ball and Tamba Hali returned it 11 yards for a score that gave the Chiefs a fourth quarter lead they wouldn't relinquish. Tuel played well early hitting Marquise Goodwin with a 59 yard touchdown to give the Bills an early 7-0 lead. Tuel's first interception led to a Chiefs first half field goal. The Bills got the running game going thanks to a couple of long runs by C.J. Spiller, who ran for 116 yards on just 12 carries. The turnovers ruined a solid effort otherwise offensively as they churned out 470 total yards and a great effort by a defense that only gave up six points on their own merit. Bills Blitz.

WRs Hurt: Robert Woods suffered a left leg injury on a deep sideline play. He went to the locker room under his own power but did not return to the game. They thought it was a bone injury but x-rays were negative. He couldn't put all his weight on his leg. Marquise Goodwin hurt his hamstring when he went up for a bomb late in the game that was called incomplete. He walked to the locker room under his own power and did not return. He had x-rays as well after the game along with Ron Brooks. Doug Marrone did not know what his injury was. C.J. Spiller had a bit more pep in his step in this game but was still hobbled with his high ankle sprain. He did not stop him from making some big plays. All of the other players who came in banged up seemed to get through the game fine. Injury Page.

Lewis Inactive: The only players inactive because of injury are the top two quarterbacks. Thad Lewis will not go with his injured ribs and EJ Manuel remains sidelined with his LCL injury. Jeff Tuel will get the start at quarterback. The healthy scratches are: Justin Rogers, Antoine McClain, Ty Powell, Ronnie Wingo, and Brandon Smith. EJ Manuel threw before the game and looked lose and mobile. He told Stacey Dales that his knee felt real good and he will increase reps in practice this week. Chris Hogan is active despite being questionable with a back injury.

Chilly Fall Weather: The weather is turning colder in Western New York but even though it will be a whiteout in the stands it won't be on the field. It will be cold but no snow for today's game. The game will be played under sunny skies with a high temperature of only 37°. The wind will be out of the North at 10mph.

Report Says It's Tuel Time: Jason LaCanfora reports for CBS Sports that Jeff Tuel will start at quarterback for the Bills against the Chiefs. He says Matt Flynn will be the backup as Thad Lewis remains doubtful with his rib injury. The Bills were holding out hope that Lewis would be able to throw before the game before turning to Tuel or Flynn. Tuel got more reps throughout the week.

Lewis Doubtful: Thad Lewis went on the practice field today but didn't make any throws during the time it was open to the media. Doug Marrone said he is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game but won't name a starting QB for Sunday's game until further evalutaions. Reports say Tim Tuel took more reps than Matt Flynn during the open portion. If his ribs start feeling better than Lewis will throw later today or tomorrow so he still has a chance to play. C.J. Spiller is listed as probable and should play along with Fred Jackson, Manny Lawson, and Stevie Johnson. They are among the nine players that are probable including Mario Williams who was added to the report with a hip injury. Chris Hogan returned to practice Friday after missing Thursday's session, he is questionable. Injury Page.

Spiller Likely To Play: Doug Marrone said after today's practice he thinks C.J. Spiller will play on Sunday and that the week off is just what he needed. Thad Lewis did not practice again today and Marrone said he's still 50-50 on playing but he hopes the league source is right. The coach would not say who would start at QB if Lewis can't go. Stevie Johnson and Fred Jackson both returned to practice along with Kyle Williams and Kraig Urbik. Chris Hogan sat out today with a back problem but he's expected to be ok. Injury Page.

Chiefs Preview: The Bills begin the second half of the season pretty much like they ended the first half, with a tough opponent. The schedule gets easier after this week but first the last undefeated team comes to the Ralph as the surprising Kansas City Chiefs come to town. The place has been a house of horrors for KC as they haven't won in Buffalo since 1986. That is a span of four regular season and two playoff games. Game Preview.

Report: Lewis Will Play: Ian Rapoport reports for NFL.com that Thad Lewis will play on Sunday. Doug Marrone said the chances are 50-50 and Lewis is battling the flu along with sore ribs but sources say he will suit up and play but may not be 100%.

Wednesday October 30 2013

Lewis 50-50: Doug Marrone said that Thad Lewis is 50-50 in his chances of playing on Sunday. He did not practice today with sore ribs. He did undergo x-rays and they came out negative. The coach did say EJ Manuel is not cleared by doctors to play yet so he will not play this week despite returning to practice on a limited basis today. It is totally up in the air who will play this week as the coach told his QB corps it could be anybody on Sunday. The coach wants to see where Lewis is at first and did say he feels better about Jeff Tuel than Matt Flynn right now because he knows him better. Lewis is also dealing with a flu bug but the coach feels he can play if he can practice by Friday. C.J. Spiller is day to day and Stevie Johnson feels he will play. Injury Page.

Tuel Takes First Team Reps: Jeff Tuel took the first team reps in practice today as Thad Lewis was not on the field and EJ Manuel was back taking part in individual drills at the beginning of practice in helmet and pads. Fred Jackson and Stevie Johnson did not practice, it was hopes Johnson would at least be limited. C.J. Spiller and Manny Lawson did some work while it appeared to the media in attendance that Marquise Goodwin was working fully.

Bills Fill Roster Spot: The Bills have swapped defensive tackles on the active roster. A day after releasing Jay Ross the team has signed Stefan Charles. The 6'5" 323 pound tackle was an undrafted free agent that was signed by the Titans this summer but released before the season started and was on their practice squad. He is a Canadian from outside Toronto and was considered the top CFL prospect this season and was drafted by Edmonton but never played for the Eskimos. Front Office Page.

Bills Hire Analytics Man: Russ Brandon announced on WGR this morning that the team has hired Mike Lyons to be the director of the new analytics departments. He is a Western New York native with 20 years of analytics experience at Xerox. He will be involved in the football department and everything that has a probability factor along with dealing with salary cap issues.

Roster Moves: The Bills didn't make any trades yesterday as the trade deadline past yesterday but they did make two moves. They once again released DT Jay Ross opening up a roster spot that has yet to be filled. They did fill the open spot on the practice squad by adding WR Cordell Roberson. He fills the opening created when Ronnie Wingo was activated on Friday. Roberson was an undrafted free agent signed by Cleveland after the draft. He was released before the season and spent time on the Panthers practice squad. Depth Chart.

Spiller Has High Ankle Sprain: C.J. Spiller will test his high ankle sprain on Tuesday to see if he has a chance to play this week. Doug Marrone finally confirmed on Monday that indeed it is the dreaded high ankle sprain that takes longer to heal. Manny Lawson will have a good chance at returning this week. He almost was ok to play against the Saints despite being listed as doubtful. Stevie Johnson and Marquise Goodwin will be limited in practice on Wednesday after Johnson suffered a hip flexor and Goodwin injured his elbow in the loss. X-rays were negative on Goodwin's elbow and Johnson was unsure if he needed an MRI. E.J. Manuel is going to ramp up his work this week as he closes in on returning to practice. Injury Page.

Injuries A Killer: We are back from our trip to the Big Easy and we are getting the website slowly back up to speed. We begin with Tony Bogyo's article breaking down the loss to the Saints and how injuries are killing the Bills this Halloween season. Complete Story.
