Bills Avoid Embarrasing Loss

Sunday December 18, 2016

Gameday Grades: It was a nice total team win. The defense made their plays and the offense responded to the only Browns touchdown with a quick one of their own. It was a game they were suppose to win and they did. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: LeSean McCoy ran for a season high 153 yards and two touchdowns as Buffalo avoided an embarrassing loss with a commanding 33-13 victory over the winless Browns. Mike Gillislee added a rushing touchdown giving the Bills a club record 27 on the season. Tyrod Taylor hit Charles Clay for a 19 yard touchdown pass just before halftime to give the Bills a 17-3 halftime lead. Taylor was 17 of 24 for 174 yards and added 49 yards on the ground. Dan Carpenter added two field goals but he once again missed an extra point. The final score could have been worse but Jonathan Williams was stopped on a fourth down goal line run in the final minutes. Bills Blitz.

Injury Update: The Bills won and it appears they came out of the game injury free. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: Kyle Williams will play today and is active after being a gametime decision with his back injury. All the other questionable players are also playing. Cordy Glenn is inactive after missing practice all week with his back injury. He had been listed as doubtful. Lerentee McCray is inactive after being ruled out on Friday. The healthy scratches are Logan Thomas, Gerald Christian, Dez Lewis, Reggie Bush, and Cardale Jones. Last week Bush was active and Jonathan Williams wasn't.

Schefter Now Reporting Ryan Out: There is another report now that Rex Ryan is going to be out as the Bills coach and this one comes from a more reliable source that Jason LaCanfora. Adam Schefter is now reporting that Ryan will be fired at the end of the season and that Doug Whaley is safe. He said Ryan already knows he's out which is creating an awkward situation at One Bills Drive. If the players know their coach is already out, how motivated will they be today to beat a winless Browns team at what will likely be a half empty stadium?

Gameday Weather: This could be the second straight snow game for the Bills. No accumulating snow is expected but their could be a snow shower or two when the game begins. Temperatures will be in the mid 20s with the wind blowing out of the WNW at 15mph making it feel in the teens.

Williams Back, No Glenn: Good news and bad news for the Bills today on the practice field. Kyle Williams was back on the field increasing the odds he will be ready to go on Sunday. Rex Ryan has said he is hopeful he will play and wasn't too concerned if he practiced or not. He is listed as questionable and will be a true gametime decision. Cordy Glenn was not on the field for a third straight day so it looks like Cyrus Kouandjio will get the start at left tackle. Glenn's back injury has been bothering more in recent weeks and he missed a good portion of last week's game with the issue. He is listed as doubtful for the game. Sammy Watkins was limited in practice again and is listed as questionable but he should play. Lerentee McCray will miss his second straight game as he has been ruled out with a concussion. Zach Brown is questionable with an ankle injury. Injury Page.

Whaley On WGR: Bills GM Doug Whaley had his regular appearance on WGR this morning and spoke about the issues with the team. He said consistency is in an issue with Tyrod Taylor and the whole team. He feels he has improved on timing routes and having command of the offense. He thinks Anthony Lynn has done a great job of balancing the run and the pass and putting them in position to score. He is excited at what the offense will look like when Lynn has an offseason to implement his offense. Until they are mathematically eliminated they will fight as hard as they can to win so playing young players is not in their thought process at this point. Once they are eliminated they will discuss it and see what they want to do. Whaley would not comment on the injury guarantee to Taylor's contract and said that Cardale Jones is not ready yet and still needs some time. They need to let him learn and not advance his progression just yet. He will not play unless both quarterbacks get hurt. They are happy with how Stephon Gilmore has stepped his game up but there is nothing new on his contract. He said the franchise tag is a possiblity for the soon to be free agent. The biggest disappointment on defense this season is the lack of consistency and they are stressing it for the last three games in all three phases of the game. They are pleasantly surprised with how well Sammy Watkins has held up since coming off of IR.

Williams, Glenn Still Out: Sammy Watkins, Lorenzo Alexander, and Charles Clay returned to practice today as expected. Cordy Glenn remains sidelined which isn't a great sign as his back is still bothering him. Kyle Williams also remains sidelined with a back issue but was seen riding the bike during practice. Jerry Hughes got a veteran day off. Rex Ryan said he's not yet worried about Williams playing on Sunday, they just don't want to lose him on the practice field. Zach Brown was added to the report as limited with an ankle issue. Injury Page.

Practice Squad Replinished: The Bills have now replinished their 10 man practice squad. A day after adding Greg Townsend Jr. to the unit, they have re-added Bryson Albright and also added RB Cedric O'Neal to the unit. O'Neal was with the Eagles this offseason after coming out of Valdosta St this year.

Game Preview: The Bills are in turmoil after their second straight loss all but eliminated them from the playoff race. Now the winless Cleveland Browns come to Orchard Park which could be just what the doctor ordered. Of course, if they manage to lose this game the turmoil could intensify into a full blown shake up before the season is even over. Marcell Dareus guaranteed a victory but several Browns have said they will not go winless so there could be a better battle than many expect. Game Preview.

Bills Sign DE To Practice Squad: The Bills have added DE Greg Townsend Jr. to the practice squad. He was an undrafted free agent of the Raiders this offseason. He played four years at USC with 15 college starts. He had 68 career tackles, including 11 for loss and 6.5 sacks. Front Office Page.

Wednesday December 14, 2016

Several Sit: As is usually the case on Wednesdays several players sat out practice today including Kyle Williams. Rex Ryan said he's feeling better and he's very hopeful he will play this weekend. Sammy Watkins, Cordy Glenn, Charles Clay, Lerentee McCray, and Lorenzo Alexander also sat out practice today. Tyrod Taylor was full go with his ongoing groin issue. Injury Page.

Tuesday December 13, 2016

Roster Moves: The Bills elevated two players from the practice squad by adding S Shamiel Gray and T Michael Ola. To make room they placed S James Ihedigbo on injured reserve with the ankle injury he suffered on Sunday and released LB Bryson Albright who will likely get one of the two open spots on the practice squad. Gray fills the hole from Ihedigbo's injury and Ola adds depth to the tackle position with Cordy Glenn still bothered by his bank injury. Ola has been on the practice squad most of the year but was on the active roster for three weeks early in the season while Gray joined it last month. Front Office Page.

Same Old Bills: A few things are certain like death and taxes. What also seems certain is that the Bills will not be in the playoff hunt as December rolls along. So things go as Bills fans hope turns into despair and a look at what is to come in the future besides turmoil and upheaval. Tony Bogyo talks about it all in his latest column. Complete Story.

Monday December 12, 2016

Taylor Remains QB: There was a big crowd for Rex Ryan's weekly Monday press conference. So big it was moved to the fieldhouse. Ryan said that Tyrod Taylor remains the starting quarterback and EJ Manuel remains number two. He has had no imput from ownership or Doug Whaley on who he should start at quarterback since it is his decision although he would listen to input from others. The coach is not thinking about the rumors swirling around his job security he is just concentrating on Cleveland and he hopes his players are as well. He said he's assuming he will be the head coach in 2017 as well. On the field, he said they have to get better at run defense and they have made the mistake of trying to do too much defensively. The coach has not ruled out playing the younger guys when they are officially eliminated from the playoff race. Right now they have only a 3% chance of making it. On the injury front, James Ihedigbo suffered an ankle injury in the loss and Kyle Williams is still dealing with back issues.

Ryan Move Not Likely Today: Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News is reporting this morning that Rex Ryan will not be fired today. Terry Pegula does not want to make an in season coaching change. That doesn't mean he won't be fired when the season ends. The report by Carucci says Pegula is frustrated by the last two losses. One of the issues according to the report is a disagreement between Ryan and Doug Whaley over the future of Tyrod Taylor as the Bills quarterback. Ryan wants to stick with Taylor while Whaley wants to bench him. If Taylor gets hurt in the final three games his 2017 salary becomes guaranteed. Whaley may not be pushing for Cardale Jones to play as has been reported but he may want to go to EJ Manuel to finish out the year. Ryan will hold his normal Monday press conference at 4:40 today which pretty much puts an end to the talk he will be fired today.
