Free Agent Frenzy Nabs Harvin, FB, & QB

Clay Latest: Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports that the Dolphins have grown tired of waiting for Charles Clay and have decided to move on. They will keep the transition tag on him but fully expect him to go to the Bills. Vic Carucci had reported that the Bills were expected to give him an offer sheet on Friday but that has not happened yet. Reports still expect the team to give him a whopper of an offer sheet that the Dolphins would struggle to match if they wanted to. They recently signed Jordan Cameron but wanted Clay to stay to form a formidable two tight end set. In other free agent news, Erik Pears found a new team signing with the 49ers. Front Office Page.

Bills Get Harvin: Adam Schefter reports that the Bills have reached an angreement on a one year deal with WR Percy Harvin. He played about half a season with Rex Ryan in New York last year. He reportedly wants to have more of a defined wide receiver role instead of a slash role but is expected to do what is needed to win. Harvin visited with the Bills for two days before reportedly visiting with the Patriots before signing with Buffalo. He adds another huge playmaker to the offense but does come with baggage as he has had issues in the locker room in the past but obviously there were no such problems with the Jets or else Ryan would't have wanted him. Depth Chart.

Chandler, Spiller Have New Homes: Two players found new homes today as C.J. Spiller has signed with the Saints and Scott Chandler ends up in New England. Chandler was released two days ago and quickly found a home as the number two tight end with the division rival. Spiller will serve the Reggie Bush role behind Mark Ingram in New Orleans.

Clay Drama Continues: After a three day visit to Western New York, Charles Clay went back to Miami the same way he came to Buffalo, in the Pegulas' private plane. He also went back without an offer sheet but the Bills may or may not need one. The Dolphins signed free agent TE Jordan Cameron last night so they may not have a need for Clay anymore. Reports out of South Florida say they don't plan to lift the tag and may still want to keep him. They also may want to make the Bills sweat it out a bit. Vic Carucci reports the Browns are not considered serious contenders for Clay and that the Bills will likely give him an offer sheet today if the tag is not lifted.

Open QB Competition: The Bills introduced Tyrod Taylor to the media in a conference call shortly after officially announce his signing. Taylor said he was told by the team that it is an open competition at quarterback and nobody is ahead of anyone else. He is a fast player with average passing skills. Rex Ryan likes him a lot and said he tried to trade for him as a member of the Jets. Taylor would be a good fit if the Bills added a read option element to the offense like Greg Roman ran while in San Francisco.

Bills Re-Sign Two; Add QB: The Bills have re-signed two of their own unrestricted free agents while adding another quarterback. The team has officially re-signed Marcus Easley and reportedly re-signed Jairus Wynn keeping them in the fold. The Easley deal has been in the works for a few weeks and the special teams ace had possibilities elsewhere including Jacksonville. Wynn was a solid contributor last year off the bench. The team has also signed Joe Flacco's backup in Baltimore as they have added Tyrod Taylor to the roster, he was the Ravens fourth round draft pick in 2011. He has completed 19 of 35 career passes for 199 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions and a 47.2 quarterback rating. He's ran the wildcat in 2013 and rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Rex Ryan added two low level assistants to his coaching staff today as well. Depth Chart.

Bills Release Chandler: The Bills have released TE Scott Chandler to free up cap space as they ready an offer sheet for Charles Clay. They are preparing an offer that is expected to be very difficult for Miami to match. The move frees up $2.25 Million in cap space and leaves just $600,000 in dead money. Front Office Page.

Felton Signs: The Bills have made their first official free agent signing by inking Jerome Felton to a reported four year deal. He has blocked for Adrian Peterson in Minnesota and was considered the best fullback on the market. He is essential to the ground and pound offensive strategy and appeared in the Pro Bowl in 2012. Vic Carrucci says the 4 year deal is worth $9.2 Million with $4 Million in guaranteed money. He spoke to the media and said he knows Rex Ryan and Greg Roman want a tough physical football team and that is what he brings to the team. He says he's excited and looking forward to the season. He got a chance to meet LeSean McCoy last night and they hit it off from the start. He says he will make things easier for him. Front Office Page.

Harvin Visiting: The Bills have confirmed that Percy Harvin is in town for a free agent visit. He joins Charles Clay, Jerome Felton, and Tyrod Taylor as confirmed visitors to One Bills Drive. The Bills are expected to sign Felton and give an offer sheet to Clay. The right side of our homepage has a tracker box for all visits.

Bills Introduce Cassel: The Bills introduced Matt Cassel at a Noon hour press conference today. Cassel was acquired from the Vikings for a 5th round pick this year and a 7th round pick next year, they got a sixth rounder back as well. The deal was finalized last week but wasn't official until the new year started yesterday and he passed his physical. Cassel said he's excited to be a Buffalo Bill and thanked everyone for bringing him in to be a part of an exciting time for the team. He said he's been in the league long enough to know he needs to compete and earn everything he gets. The coaches will pick who is the guy that starts but at the end of the day they are all teammates and they will all compete to get better. He is comfortable with a run oriented offense if it brings wins. He said his broken foot now feels great and he can do everything he did before the injury. He is accustomed to learning new playbooks as he has had eight offensive coordinators over the last seven years. He feels he has a lot of football left in him and has great knowledge of the game. It's all about the team concept and coming together as a team. He feels he can regain the level of success he has had in the past. They have not discussed a contract extension at this time. He hopes to use the weather condiditions as an advantage for the team.

Trying To Get Harvin In: Doug Whaley acknowledged that Jerome Felton and Charles Clay are in for a visit and that they are trying to get Percy Harvin in for a visit. He said there is no framework of a deal for Felton. He admitted that the salary cap is getting eaten up pretty quickly but they are going to work it to their best to get things done they need to get done. He would not talk about any contract negotiations or details. They are looking at all positions that can help upgrade the football team. On Fred Jackson he said there never was a thought of cutting him and he has the opportunity to go out and earn playing time. Whaley expects a training camp battle for the starting QB job. They are continuing to research every option at QB.

Kyle Williams Contract Extension: The Bills continue to spend money on the defensive line as Adam Schefter reports that they have given Kyle Williams a contract extension that will tie him to Buffalo through the 2017 season. He will get $10.5 Million in the final year of what is now a three year deal. The move most likely frees up cap space so the team can front load in offer sheet for Charles Clay.

Free Agents Visit Buffalo: The Bills confirmed two free agent visits last night as Vikings FB Jerome Felton and Dolphins transition tagged TE Charles Clay are in town. The Bills reportedly have a deal done with Felton but are structuring it in a way that will give them the chance at the best possible offer sheet for Clay. Other reports have Percy Harvin making his first free agent visit to Buffalo. He played for Rex Ryan part of last year with the Jets who released him yesterday. One report has Ravens backup QB Tyrod Taylor coming to town for a visit. The Bills officially announced the trade for Matt Cassel last night. There were rumors that he failed his physical and the deal would fall through. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports he initial did fail it because he is recovering from a broken foot but the Bills realize the risk from it and passed him to allow the trade to go through. Adam Caplan reports the Bills were weighing their options yesterday including possibly talking to Brian Hoyer and Matt Moore. Keep track of all free agent visits with our tracker box on the right side of the homepage.

Clay Reportedly Visiting: Charles Clay reportedly is in town for a visit with the team according to Vic Carucci. If he likes what he sees it appears an offer sheet will be extended. If he signs the offer sheet the Dolphins will have seven days to match the offer to the transition tagged tight end or lose him to the Bills with no compensation. Reports say that the Bills really covet Clay so they will have to make the offer creative enough with a lot of upfront money to make it difficult for Miami to match. Check out our free agent visit tracker on the right side of our homepage.

Bills Introduce McCoy: The Bills introduced LeSean McCoy to the media shortly after officially announcing the trade about an hour after the league year began. McCoy said he was disappointed when first learning about the trade since he didn't know what was going on after being in Philadelphia his whole career. When he thought about it he realized it was best move. He found a team that really wants him and he is going to give them everything he has. The organization has been great and accepted him with open arms and he can't wait to get to work with his teammates and build a championship. He has no reservations coming to Buffalo since it's a team that wants him and is committed to running the ball. He likes Greg Roman's ability to get him the ball in space and the winning tradition of Rex Ryan. Loves the great defense they have. Seemed excited about the signing of Jerome Felton and praised the productivity of Fred Jackson and spoke about the major role he will still have with the team this year. He can do it all and he will do whatever they have planned for him since he knows this team is close and it starts with the defense. He doesn't want to play against this defense he likes that he is teaming up with them. He feels good and fresh and can't wait to get out there and prove himself in a new place. He said the way he runs he doesn't take too many hits so he feels he has a lot more in the tank and will continue to avoid injuries. He joked that he will need to diet after eating all the good food they have in Buffalo. Being around he thinks the city and the people are nice and he's having a ball.

Felton Reportedly A Bill: Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Bills have signed their first free agent. They have reportedly agreed to a four year deal with former Vikings FB Jerome Felton. It is reportedly worth $2.3 Million per year. He was considered the top fullback on the market. While the trend in the league is to go away from the fullback, the Bills will use one in their ground and pound offense. Depth Chart.

Searcy, Smith Gone: Free agency is now underway so LeSean McCoy and Matt Cassel are officially members of the Bills. Two of the Bills free agents have signed elsewhere as Lee Smith signed with Oakland, a three year deal worth $9 Million. Da'Norris Searcy is now a Tennessee Titan. Signing a four year deal worth $24 Million with over $10 Million guaranteed. McCoy is expected to address the media in a bit. The team reportedly will have competition for Charles Clay as the Browns are reportedly hot to get him as well. Both teams can likely structure a contract that Miami would have a lot of trouble matching. Front Office Page.

Bills Lose Out On Powell, Bulaga: As free agency is about to get underway two potential target of the Bills are about to be off the market. Balil Powell as re-signing with the Jets and Bryan Bulaga is re-signing with the Packers. John Warrow of the AP is reporting that the Bills will be giving Charles Clay an offer sheet at 4pm when the market opens.

Free Agency Set To Begin: Free agency officially gets underway at 4pm today as players will get to sign with other teams. For three days a negotiation period has been ongoing so several players already have made it known where they will be going. The Bills of course have been busy already re-signing their most important unrestricted free agent Jerry Hughes. The trades for Matt Cassel and LeSean McCoy will be official as well when the league year starts at 4pm. McCoy has been in Buffalo since Sunday as he agreed on a new five year deal that will be signed today as well. WKBW's Jeff Russo reports that the Bills are still working hard to re-sign special teams ace Marcus Easley. The Jaguars and two other teams are reportedly bidding for his services. Tim Graham reports for the Buffalo News that Lee Smith is expected to sign a surprisingly lucrative deal with another club shortly after the frenzy begins. The Bills are reportedly interested in free agent tackle Bryan Bulaga. They also reportedly will not be scared off by the transition tag on Dolphins TE Charles Clay. Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reports that the Bills are favored to land Vikings fullback Jerome Felton. We will be following the entire frenzy on this latest news page, our front office page, and on our twitter feed.

Gay Gets Extension: It seems Rex Ryan may like the idea of a kickoff specialist like Doug Marrone did. The Bills gave Jordan Gay a contract extension today. He was the only exclusive rights free agent to not get tendered last week increasing the thought he would become an unrestricted free agent. He had 49 touchbacks in 80 kickoffs last year. Depth Chart.

Jackson Reportedly Staying: Twitter has been a buzz today with rumors the Bills were about to part ways with Fred Jackson. The reports were fueled by rumors the Bills will try to sign Bilal Powell in free agency. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reported this afternoon that the Bills will not get rid of Jackson and they have approached him about a contract restucturing but want him to stay. He also reports that Terry Pegula stepped in to make sure Jackson wasn't released. WKBW's Shawn Stepner quotes a source close to Jackson that said, "We feel very comfortable with Fred's status on the team and his role and contributions going forward."

Bills Announce Hughes Re-Signing: The Bills held a press conference to announce the re-signing of Jerry Hughes keeping the pass rusher off of the free agent market. Doug Whaley said it is time to celebrate Hughes being a Buffalo Bill. It is what they are trying to accomplish, developing players and keeping them the GM said. Hughes opened the press conference thanking everyone and saying he's excited and it is time to get back to work. The main focus is to get an AFC East banner in the building. He wanted to come back with these guys to get things accomplished as they know they can do better than the 9-7 finish from last season. Everyone has a willingness to win and he wants to be a part of a team like that. He feels with Rex Ryan aboard he can be part of something special. The camarade he has with the other defensive linemen in the room was a big factor in wanting to come back. He is happy in Buffalo and isn't worried if there were better offers on the open market. He said it's an all new vibe at One Bills Drive and he's excited that they will do a little bit of everything on defense. He said he's come a long way but has a long way still to go. Another key thing in coming back is the fan support and the opportunity the Bills gave him to play after his experience in Indianapolis. When he left at the end of the season he told his agent let's make it work in Buffalo. Whaley said keeping Hughes was number one on their wish list as they want to keep the core together as long as possible. Every decision they try to make is to win games. The cap hit is less at the beginning to give them flexibility heading into tomorrow. When asked if there is more to come, Whaley said with a smirk, "wait and see". On Marcell Dareus he said since they don't have a large chunk of the cap spent at QB they can spend it in other places like the defensive line. They are going to win by playing good defense while running the football, and having the QB protect it.

Bills Re-Sign Hughes: The Bills got the deal done to keep Jerry Hughes in Buffalo on the eve of the official start of free agency. Vic Carucci of the Buffalo news was the first to report the deal as Hughes seems to be a perfect fit for Rex Ryan's defense. The deal has been in the works since the scouting combine. The deal reportedly is a five year contract worth $45 Million with $20 Million guaranteed according to Ian Rapoport. Carucci also reported that six other teams were interested in Hughes but he made it clear during negotiations that his preference was to remain in Buffalo. Front Office Page.
