NEWS ARCHIVES - JAN 13TH - JAN 26TH, 2014 PREVIOUS WEEK

Pettine Replaced By Schwartz

Bills Hire Schwartz: The Bills wasted little time filling the open defensive coordinator position. They announced the hiring of former Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. He was fired last month but his Lions defense finished 4th against the run. Before his five years in Detroit he spent eight years as the defensive coordinator of the Titans. His defenses finished 7th and 5th in his final two years in Tennessee. He looks to run a flexible scheme but has a history in the 4-3. Doug Marrone released a statement where he talked about Scheartz's aggressiveness and high production. The team is reportedly still deciding whether to give the Browns permission to talk to LB coach Jim O'Neil tobe Mike Pettine's defensive coordinator.

Bills Hire QB Coach: The Bills added a member of Jim Schwartz's staff by hiring Todd Downing as the QB coach. The team did not have one last year as Nathaniel Hackett did both jobs. Downing coached Thad Lewis in Detroit.

Bills Lose Pettine: After days of speculation the Bills are officially in the market for a new defensive coordinator. Mike Pettine has been hired as the head coach of the Browns. It was a zany hiring process that dragged on so long that he almost pulled out because it wasn't fair to Buffalo. He praised the Bills in his introductory press conference in Cleveland. Now the Bills put their plan in place to replace him as they see if they lose anymore assistants to Pettine's staff.

Dareus To Pro Bowl: Marcell Dareus is the fourth Bill to go to the Pro Bowl. He is going as a replacement for Justin Smith who is playing in the Super Bowl. Dareus is the third defensive linemen from the team to go. It is his first Pro Bowl selection.

QB Coach Likely: Doug Marrone is at the Senior Bowl conducting interviews for the open WR coaching spot. He also confirmed that he is looking to hire a QB coach to take some of the work load off of Nathaniel Hackett who served as both the QB coach and offensive coordinator this past year.

Pettine To Get 2nd Interview: Chris Mortensen is reporting for ESPN that Mike Pettine will get a 2nd interview with the Browns for their head coaching job sometime early this week. Speculation says that Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase is their number one choice but he won't interview until after the Broncos season is over and even then he may not be interested. Josh McDaniels has taken himself out of the running but they may make another run at him. Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is also on their radar.

Bills Add Five More: The Bills continue to build their offseason roster by signing five more players to reserve/future contracts. The newest Bills are WR Ramses Barden, FS Jajuan Harley, LB Willie Jefferson, WR Chris Summers, and LB Nathan Williams. Barden is the biggest name on the list as he was a third round pick of the Giants in 2009. The 6'6" receiver has 29 career catches and 1 start. Harley was with the Seahawks last summer as an undrafted free agent. Jefferson was an undrafted free agent who appeared in six games for the Texans this year. Summers is another big receiver who was on the Vikings practice squad in 2012. Williams is an Ohio State product who spent a bit of time with the Vikings and the Dolphins last summer. Depth Chart.

Bills Hire Defensive Coach: The Bills announced today they have hired defensive assistant Jeff Hafley. He was the safeties coach for Tampa Bay the past two seasons after 11 seasons in the collegiate ranks starting at Worcester Polytechnic University in 2001 before a four year stint at the University of Albany, then five years at Pittsburgh and a season at Rutgers. Pettine To Interview In Cleveland: The Bills have confirmed that they have given the Browns permission to interview defensive coordinator Mike Pettine for their open head coaching job. Reports say the interview is scheduled for today. It is the only open head job in the league at this point which means they likely are not in a rush to hire a coach. The Browns have preached patience to their fans as they do a thorough search that will likely include coaches on the four staffs that remain in the playoffs.

Alonso Honored: Kiko Alonso was named the Professional Football Writers of America's Defensive Rookie of the Year. Green Bay's Eddie Lacy was the overall PFWA rookie of the year and San Diego WR Keenan Allen was the offensive winner. The big rookie award is given out by the Associated Press and will be announced at the league's awards dinner the night before the Super Bowl.

Three Signed: The Bills announced the signing of three future free agents. They added RB Anthony Allen, LB Kourtnei Brown and OL Randy Colling. Brown was with the team last summer before being released in the last round of cuts. Allen was a 7th round draft pick of the Ravens in 2011 and appeared in 21 games mostly on special teams. The Western New York Native Colling played defensive tackle in the Arena league last year. The Bills will move him to guard. Front Office Page.

Bills Fire LB Coach: The Bills announced today that they have relieved linebackers coach Chuck Dreisbach of his duties. He was with the team for just one season and coached mainly the inside backers. He coached in the college ranks for 36 years before joining the Bills. He is the second coach to be fired since the season ended. WR coach Ike Hilliard was let go shortly after the season ended. There have been no replacements named for either coach. Front Office Page.
