NEWS ARCHIVES - DEC 15TH - DEC 21ST, 2014 PREVIOUS WEEK

Playoff Hopes Come Crashing Down To Earth In Oakland

Gameday Grades: The disappointing loss is shared by all three units. The offense was pathetic throughout while the defense gave up a few too many big plays. The special teams didn't help much either. Gameday Grades.

Bills Blitz: While everyone was wondering what it would take to get the Bills into the playoffs we all forgot that the first piece of the puzzle was a victory against the two win Raiders. The team forgot that as well as they played their worst game of the year in a 26-24 loss that eliminated them from a playoff berth for a 15th consecutive season. Derek Carr threw two touchdown passes using big pass plays to on both scoring drives. Sebastian Janikowksi hit four field goals to lead the Raiders to the upset win. Kyle Orton was widely inaccurate most of the game despite throwing a 42 yard touchdown pass to Sammy Watkins, a 29 yard scoring pass to Scott Chandler, and a 30 yarder to Robert Woods with 1:09 to play that brought them to within two but they didn't recover the onside kick and the game was over. The Watkins score gave the Bills an early 7-0 lead but they seemed to stop playing after that. Chandler's score pulled them to within two at 19-17 on the first play of the fourth quarter but the Raiders responded with a huge touchdown. Bills Blitz.

Dareus, Gilmore Hurt: Marcell Dareus went down in the first half with a right knee injury. He got tangled up on a play limped for a bit before going down. Trainers helped him off the field. He went to the locker room and then came back to the sidelines. He was walking pretty well but was ruled out for the game before halftime. Stephon Gilmore suffered a concussion in the third quarter when he hit the grass hard making a tackle. He walked off and went straight to the locker room and did not return. Injury Page.

Gameday Inactives: Chris Gragg is the lone scratch that is injury related. He was the only player listed as questionable on the injury report with a knee injury. The rest of the report was littered with probable players all who are active. Da'Norris Searcy and Duke Williams are playing, Searcy missed last week's game and Williams left with concussion symptoms. Jairus Wynn returns after missing more than a month with a knee injury. Bryce Brown leads the list of healty scratches now that C.J. Spiller is back. The other inactives are Ross Cockrell, Deonte Thompson, Cyrus Kouandjio, Randell Johnson, and Larry Dean.

Nice West Coast Weather: It will be a nice day for football in Northern California when the Bills hit the field to battle the Raiders in Oakland. The gametime temperature will be 64° under mostly cloudy skies. Winds will be out of the WNW at 9mph with very little chance of rain.

Spiller Activated; Listed As Probable: The Bills announced they are activating C.J. Spiller for the game against the Raiders and have listed him as probable. He is one of eight Bills listed as probable on the final injury report. Marcus Thigpen was added to the injury report Thursday and was limited with swelling in his foot. He is one of the probable players and is expected to play on Sunday. Both injured safeties are probable as well. Duke Williams has gone through the concussion protocols of the league and Da'Norris Searcy hamstring injury has improved. Chris Gragg is listed as questionable with his knee injury. Injury Page.

Thigpen Limited: Marcus Thigpen was added to the injury report today, he was limited with swelling in his foot. He is expected to play on Sunday. Scott Chandler was back today after being out with an illness yesterday the rest of the report was the same. C.J. Spiller looked good and was explosive according to Doug Marrone but has yet to be activated off of the IR/designated to return list. All signs point to that happening in time for the game. They have until Saturday at 4pm to do so for him to play against Oakland. Injury Page.

Raiders Preview: The Bills enter the second to last week of the season and we are still talking about playoff scenarios how about that? The Bills need to avoid the letdown or even a trap game as they travel out West to take on the two win Raiders. Complete Preview.

Wednesday December 17, 2014

Spiller Limited: C.J. Spiller has yet to be activated from the IR/designated to return list but was limited in practice today. Scott Chandler was the only player sitting out as he was ill. Chris Gragg was back on the practice field for the first time since injuring his knee against the Jets. Duke Williams is still going through the concussion protocols but was limited in practice today along with fellow safety Da'Norris Searcy who has a hamstring injury. Injury Page.

Brandon Praises Marrone: Russ Brandon spoke glowingly about Coach Marrone during his WGR radio appearance. He said he has done an incredible job in the past year especially after you reflect on the major changes that the club has had over the past year including the stadium renovations, prolonged training camp, historic snowstorm, death of the owner, and ownership change in the middle of the season. To be in the position they are today is a credit to him. He has brought a level of consistency and empowerment and he has everyone holding themselves accountable. He doesn't even know why Marrone returning would even be a topic of discussion and seemed very irritated by the questioning during his weekly appearance on the team's flagship station. He feels it is a great partnership between Marrone and Doug Whaley saying they have done a great job.

Tuesday December 16, 2014

Summers Released: The Bills made room on the 53 man roster today to activate C.J. Spiller. They released FB Frank Summers who had been inactive the past few weeks. He was the only true fullback on the roster although TE MarQuies Gray has seen time in the backfield. Doug Marrone said yesterday that they plan to activate Spiller. Depth Chart.

Huge Win: Tony Bogyo breaks down the monumental victory over the Green Bay Packers. He can't help wonder what could have been with at least an average offense in losses to Kansas City, Houston, and Miami. Complete Story.

Monday December 15, 2014

Spiller To Be Activated: Doug Marrone said today that C.J. Spiller has been cleared to play and will be activated by the team for this week's game against Oakland. The coach reserved judgement on if he will play until he sees how he is in practice. The coach also said that Duke Williams continues to go through the NFL's concussion protocol and that Da'Norris Searcy will be limited in practice on Wednesday with his hamstring injury. Injury Page.

Win Doesn't Help Playoff Chances Much: Many are talking about the shocking 21-13 win over Green Bay as a monumental win for the franchise but the bottom line is it didn't help their playoff chances that much. Their chances of making the playoffs only went up very slightly with less than a 10% chance of making the playoffs. To qualify for the postseason for the first time in 14 years they need to win out which would include their first ever win at Gillette Stadium. They would then need only two of following five teams to finish with 10 wins, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Kansas City, and San Digeo. The Bills don't hold the tiebreaker against any of these teams. The Chiefs and Chargers have the same 8-6 record as the Bills. Baltimore and Pittsburgh are 9-5 while Cincinnati is 9-4-1. The players have the day off today for victory Monday to celebrate what was a great defensive and special teams effort in getting a huge win regardless of playoff implications.
