QB Carousel After Kolb Gets Hurt

Bills Trade For QB: The Bills added a second QB today by trading LB Chris White to Detroit for Thaddeus Lewis. The moves come as reports fear the worst regarding Kevin Kolb's concussion. Sources told Tim Graham of the Buffalo News that the team fears Kolb's injury is career ending. There is a glimmer of good news as NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports EJ Manuel is on track to be back in time for opening day. Lewis was an undrafted free agent signed in 2010 by St. Louis and then he spent time in Cleveland before going to Detroit. He started last year's season finale for the Browns in a 24-10 loss to the Steelers. He went 22 of 32 for 204 yards with a touchdown and an interception in that game.

Bills Reportedly Sign Leinart: Adam Schefter is reporting that the Bills have signed Matt Leinart to a contract. The Bills reportedly were brining John Beck and Leinart in for a visit today as Doug Whaley said they would have another quarterback on the roster in time for Monday morning's practice and it appears Linehart is the guy. He is a former 10th overall pick who has 18 career starts, 11 his rookie year.

Who Helped Themselves: The only player that seemed to play well was the man who was dealing with a personal tragedy. C.J. Spiller scored the team's lone touchdown and led the way with 39 yards on the ground on 8 carries. Nobody else really seemed to assert themselves as the defense struggled and the offense went into a shell after Kevin Kolb got hurt.

Who Hurt Themselves: Kevin Kolb didn't do anything to shed his injury prone label with a third career concussion likely in the loss. Jeff Tuel didn't give the coaches any reason to be confident in him either. Stephon Gilmore gave up a long catch and a touchdown along with dropping an interception before getting hurt. The coaching staff didn't look good as the team didn't look ready to play as they were out played physically on both sides of the ball.

Leinart, Beck To Visit: The Bills are in desperate need of another quarterback and several reports say that Matt Leinart and John Beck are due in Buffalo for a visit tomorrow. Leinart is a former 10th overall pick who has 18 career starts, 11 his rookie year. Beck was a 2nd round pick of the Dolphins 2007 and has seven career starts. He was out of football last year.

Bad Day In DC: Not only did the Bills get blown out in the Nation's Capitol 30-7, but for their second straight preseason game they lost a quarterback to injury. Kevin Kolb went down with concussion like symptoms in the first quarter while Stephon Gilmore and Da'Norris Searcy also left the loss with injuries. Kolb took a shot to the back of the head on a scramble. He stayed in the game and finished the drive. He has had at least two concussions in his career. C.J. Spiller scored the only touchdown for the Bills on a two yard run. He gave the team another scare on the play when he hurt his knee. It turned out to be a cut and he later returned running for 39 yards on 8 carries. Jeff Tuel was the only healthy quarterback left after Kolb went down on the Bills lone scoring drive. He struggled as well as the Bills went three and out on their final seven possessions and he only led them to three first downs in a little more than three quarters off action.Injury Page.

Spiller's Family Tragedy: Before the game it was reported that the step grandfather of C.J. Spiller killed himself after reportedly killing two people and shooting two others. Hubert Allen Jr. reportedly went to Pritchett Trucking where he used to work and shot an employee. He then went to the home of the owner and killed him and another man while shooting a fourth person before turning the gun on himself. It was unknown right away if Spiller knew about it before the game.

Bills In Washington: The all important third preseason game is today as the Bills are in the nation's capitol. This is the game that the starters play well into the third quarter before getting little playing time in the preseason finale on Thursday night. the luster is off a bit as EJ Manuel is sidelined along with the top two Washington quarterbacks are sidelined. Kourtnei Brown is also going to miss the game for the Bills. Kevin Kolb can use the game to try and cement the starting job even if Manuel comes back healthy in time for the opener. We will have our usual list of players who hurt and helped themselves late tonight or tomorrow morning. For comments throughout the game follow us on twitter.

Byrd Reports: Jairus Byrd reported to the team yesterday as expected and travelled with them to Washington today in advance of tomorrow's preseason game against the Redskins. He will not play however as the team received a two week roster exemption for him which means they will be allowed to carry an extra player through the first round of player cuts. There is some speculation that Byrd is still unhappy with the situation that forced him to come back to the club under the franchise tag. There likely will need to mend fences if a long term deal is to be struck next offseason.

Marrone Won't Break Camp: Doug Marrone asked the media for help and wants them not to call it "breaking camp" when the team leaves St. John Fisher College after this afternoon's practice. He said they need to continue to get better and he doesn't want to call it breaking camp because there is a lot of work to do. He is pleased on how far they have come so far.

Byrd Signs Tender: Jairus Byrd has signed his franchise tender and will report to the team. The timing makes sense as the Bills break camp tomorrow it gives Byrd over two weeks to prepare for the season without having to attend the formal training camp. Sources tell Chris Brown of the team's website that he will report on Thursday when the team returns to One Bills Drive. Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that he signed a straight tender and the team didn't waive their right to tag him again next year.

Gilmore Leaves Practice Early: The Bills held their final night practice of camp and only EJ Manuel and Jay Ross were not taking part at the beginning but it didn't stay that way. Stephon Gilmore came to the sidelines to have his foot looked at about an hour into the work out and did not return. They took his shoe off and looked at it for a while before he put his shoe back on and watched from the sidelines. Doug Marrone said it was his toe and he got it re-taped but was told he is fine. Ross went home because his wife was having a baby. Kourtnei Brown was working off to the side with trainers. Kiko Alonso, Stevie Johnson and Sam Young all left practice for a bit and went back in the locker room but all of them returned. Justin Rogers took team reps for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury a few weeks ago and is expected to return Saturday along with Crezdon Butler. Injury Page.

Injury Update: The Bills are down to just two more practices before breaking camp. They have a practice session tonight and one tomorrow afternoon before heading back to Orchard Park. Injury wise they aren't an that bad of shape. Only two players totally sat out of yesterday's practice as EJ Manuel is the only player currently totally sidelined. Keith Williams has been designated waived-injured after being sidelined most of camp and he's no longer on the team. Four players were limited Crezdon Butler, Kendall Gaskins, Kourtnei Brown, and Thomas Welch were working back on to the field. The only big time player still banged up is Manuel although Stevie Johnson, Leodis McKelvin, and T.J. Graham are still not 100%. Injury Page.

Johnson To Play Saturday: Stevie Johnson practiced again today and said he will play on Saturday against Washingotn. He joins T.J. Graham back in the lineup. EJ Manuel is back at St. John Fisher but is staying off his knee for 48 hours but taking part in meetings. Doug Marrone was waiting to talk to the doctors further to get an update on his condition. He appears to be hoping he may come back earlier than expected.

Bradham In Trouble For Marijuana Violation: The Tonawanda News reports that Bills LB Nigel Bradham has received an appearance ticket for marijuana possession and a violation for tinted windows. The report says police pulled him over early Saturday morning and they allegedly smelled marijuana in the vehicle. Bradham reportedly handed it over but it was too small an amount to bring him in. The NFL will not look kindly on this news and a suspension is definitely possible for the man who is penciled in as a starter at inside linebacker. The Bills tweeted a statement, "We are still in the process of gathering the facts surrounding this report and will reserve comment until we have completed that process.”

Bills Release Lindell: The Bills have released their longest tenured player as Rian Lindell has been let go. He is the team's all time leading scorer and most accurate kicker in team history in his 10 years with the team. Dustin Hopkins won the job as it was his too lose after being drafted in the sixth round out of Florida State. The Bills now have an all Seminole trio on special teams. Punter Shawn Powell was Hopkins' holder for three years at Florida State and veteran long snapper Garrison Sanborn is also from the school. Lindell showed more accuracy in camp than Hopkins but didn't dominant the rookie which is what he would have needed to do to hold on to his job. Hopkins has great power in his leg something the aging Lindell doesn't have anymore. Front Office Page.
