Bills Win Preseason Opener

Bills Beat Colts 44-20: EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel combined 35 of 44 passing for 319 yards and three touchdowns as the Bills set a franchise record in points scored in a preseason game in their 44-20 victory over the Colts. The Bills got help from a 107 yard kick return for a score by Marquise Goodwin and a 17 yard interception return for a score by Jumal Rolle in between Manuel connected with Dorin Dickerson for a 17 yard score and Tuel hit Da'Rick Rogers for a six yard score and Brandon Kaufman for a five yard scoring strike. Dustin Hopkins hit two field goals and Rian Lindell hit one to finish up the scoring. Manuel struggled a bit early against the Colts top defense but did well against the backups as he played the entire first half before giving way to Tuel to start the second half. Manuel saved the best for last when he led the team on a 92 yard scoring drive in 10 plays to wrap up the first half with the scoring strike to Dickerson. We will have a list of who helped themselves and who hurt themselves early tomorrow morning. The Bills came away without any serious injuries, Thomas Welch left late in the game and was looked at by trainers.Injury Page.

Scott Chandler did not make the trip as he was kept back in Western New York as a precaution. Kyle Williams and Mario Williams are both dressed for the game and should see some playing time.

Manuel To Start Sunday: EJ Manuel will start the preseason opener Sunday against Indianapolis, Doug Marrone announced after practice Friday night. Kevin Kolb took part in individual and one on one drills but did not take part in team drills as he went off to the locker room for extra treatment on his knee. Marrone said that the knee was still sore and may have been a bit stiff. Kolb will travel to Indy but he will be the third quarterback and is expected to only play in an emergency. The coach is concerned putting him back on a plane after he just got off of one because of the stiffness. Marrone said all the healthy players are prepared to play the whole game.

Kolb Back: Kevin Kolb is back with the team and participated in the morning walkthrough that took place inside due to rain. He is expected to practice tonight with the team. No word on if, or how much, he will play on Sunday. Kolb seemingly has recovered from the knee injury suffered in practice last Saturday morning when he slipped on a wet mat. He was out of town all week due a death in the family.

Morning Practice: The Bills held an open morning practice today that was originally scheduled to be closed to the public. This is the 10th practice at St. John Fisher College with seven more on the schedule before they break camp on August 21st. The team practiced on the turf field today after overnight rain. Leodis McKelvin sat out again today. He missed yesterday's practice with soreness. Cordy Glenn was back in his usual left tackle spot with Colin Brown back taking first team reps at left guard during 11 on 11 drills. The team started preparing for Sunday's game in Indianapolis by pumping music on to the field for the first time in camp. Kendall Gaskins left practice early with a heavy wrap on his left leg. Mario Williams and Kyle Williams both seeemed to have their most extensive action in team drills so far in this camp. Dustin Hopkins was a perfect 11 for 11 on field goal attempts today. Glenn Working Inside: Thomas Welch received reps with the first team at left tackle and also took reps at left guard as well today. Cordy Glenn worked inside today with the first team at left guard. Doug Marrone confirmed it is not a position switch they just want to see if Glenn can be a swing player. The coach has said that they are not happy with how the left guard battle is shaping up as the job remains very much up for grabs. Many draftniks thought Glenn would work much better as a guard in the NFL but the Bills old regime always felt he can play tackle in this league and had some success during his rookie season. Marrone is just looking to get as much versatility as he can get on the line since they are only planning on dressing 7 linemen during a game.

Kolb To Return Thursday Night: Kevin Kolb is not back with the team as he is still out of town after the death of his grandmother. He is expected back on Thursday night and will meet with the Doctors Friday morning. Still to early to know if he'll play in Sunday's preseason opener. EJ Manuel was the first player on the field for this morning's practice. Leodis McKelvin did not dressed for practice, no word yet on his situation. He was not listed as one of the players hurt in the scrimmage.

Bills Quickly Fill Silva's Spot: The Bills moved quickly to fill the roster spot opened up by Mana Silva leaving the team. They signed safety Mark LeGree who was given Silva's #30. The journeyman spent some time in Mike Pettine's defense with the Jets in 2011. He has spent time with six NFL teams on practice squad's and active rosters. He was drafted by Seattle in the fifth round of the 2011 draft. Depth Chart.

Spiller The Focal Point: Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was on WGR this morning and was asked if C.J. Spiller will be the focal point of the offense this year. His answer was, "uh...yea" rather surprised it would even be a question. He said he will give him the ball "until he throws up or taps out." Hackett said they are in the entertainment business and he knows fans want to see CJ get the ball and to throw bombs. Hackett also said the offense is better because they see everything a defense can throw at them from their own defense.

Silva Leaves Squad: S Mana Silva has left the Bills without permission and the team has placed him on the exempt-left squad list. That gives them a roster exemption. His agent told AP that he's re-examining his priorities as he's experiencing recent personal issues. The team gets back on the field this morning after having a day off Tuesday following Monday night's scrimmage. Front Office Page.

Three Banged Up In Scrimmage: Doug Marone told the media after last night's scrimmage that three players were banged up and did not finish. DT Aaron Tipoti suffered a right ankle injury early in the session. Outside LB Keith Pough suffered a chest injury while RB Zach Brown injured his ribs. Brown's injury opened the door for extra playing time for Kendall Gaskins to shine. Injury Page.

Scrimmage Notes: EJ Manuel did not get off to a good start during last night's scrimmage having his first pass picked off and returned for a score by Leodis McKelvin. He bounced back with a nice touchdown passes to TJ Graham and Drew Smith to go along with his two interceptions. Arthur Moats had the other pick. Jeff Tuel came out on fire hitting three long passes to Marquise Goodwin, Da'Rick Rogers, and Mark Easley. Kendall Gaskins got a lot of work and was impressive throughout along with Tashard Choice who ran hard in goal line drills. Goodwin also helped himself with a really nice night. Fred Jackson had two really nice runs during the two minute drill where Manuel drove the team 75 yards to a score. Manuel hit Robert Woods for a big pass play setting up the Choice score.

Kolb Excused: Kevin Kolb has been excused from tonight's scrimmage but not because of his knee injury, he had a death in his family. C.J. Spiller will be limited but not because of an injury. Scott Chandler and Mario Williams are also limited tonight. Not participating because of injuries are Stevie Johnson, Kevin Elliott, Justin Rogers, Duke Williams, Chris Hairston, Mike Caussin and Kyle Williams.

Scrimmage Tonight: The Bills will do their most extensive stretch of live football tonight when they hold an intrasquad scrimmage during the practice that begins at 6:10pm. Kevin Kolb has a chance to compete after missing Sunday's practice with the knee injury suffered when a slipped on a matt during Saturday's practice. Doug Marrone said that not everyone will participate in the scrimmage that could have more than 50 plays in it and it will be played with all the rules. He is expected to have a final list today of who will participate. After some stretching the team will undergo pursuit and individual drills before a special teams period. They will do some 7 on 7 and then take a break before starting the full scale scrimmage. They will do two in field drives. They will then do red zone, goal line, and two minute drills.
