Edwards Out As Defensive Coordinator

Cortez Leaves: The Bills have lost their QB coach. George Cortez has been hired as the new head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. The Bills gave Hamilton permission to talk to him earlier in the week. Chan Gailey released a statement saying, "George did an excellent job during his time with us and I want to offer my congratulations to him in his new role as head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-cats. We're excited for him with this new opportunity and wish him the best of luck." That leaves two openings on Chan Gailey's staff as they will need an inside linebackers coach to replace Dave Wannstedt who is now the defensive coordinator.

Reed A Finalist: Congratulations to Bills great Andre Reed who is once again a finalist for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is one of 15 modern era players who are on the list. The Class of 2012 will be announced the day before the Super Bowl.

Signings Official: The Bills officially announced the future free agent singings of the seven players we reported yesterday. Five of the seven players were on the practice squad and the moves were necessary to keep their rights through the offseason. The other two were WR David Clowney and LB Scott McKillop. Those two players have a bit more experience. McKillop rehabbed two severe knee injuries last season and played for Dave Wannstedt at Pitt.

No Mention Of Bills: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo held his annual State of the State address yesterday and said he wants to give Buffalo $1 Billion as part of a rebuilding project of the city. There was no mention however of his desire to keep the Bills in Western New York or a pledge by him for the state to help out in stadium improvements.

Bills Reported Signings: The Bills have not announced any signings since the season ended but several have been reported. Free agent wide receiver David Clowney wrote on twitter that he has signed with the Bills. He last played 10 games with Carolina in 2010 and spent four seasons with the Jets. He has 22 career catches. There are also some reported reserve/future signings including LB Robert Eddins who was with the club's practice squad at the end of the season. Also reportedly on the reserve/future signings list are Prince Miller, Jay Ross, Jake Vermiglio and Keith Williams. All these players were also on the team's practice squad at the end of the season. A report also says they have signed former 49er LB Scott McKillop to a reserve/future contract.

New Radio Home For Bills: Russ Brandon was on WGR radio this morning and announced that the all sports station is the new radio home of the team. 97 Rock and 103.3 FM was the old radio home but they dropped out of the bidding. WGR is available online and also is the home of the Sabres. It's a natural fit for the team.

Cortez Pursued: The Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL have been given permission by the Bills to talk to QB coach George Cortez about their open head coaching job. The Bills coaching staff is currently under evaluation by Chan Gailey and Buddy Nix as part of a thorough evaluation process of the entire football organization. It is unclear if Cortez would be kept on the staff anyway. Most of Cortez's coaching career has come north of the border.

Lease Talks To Heat Up? New Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has made securing a new lease agreement with the Bills his top priority for 2012. He has decided to hire a private attorney to deal with the negotiations and wants a deal done by the end of the year. The Bills lease expires in July of 2013. The Bills are currenty using an architect to go over the building to see what kind of improvements are needed in the facility.

Injuries Not Severe: Like the injury to Kraig Urbik, Demetrius Bell is expected to be fine. Neither player suffered the dreaded torn ACL. They both had a torn meniscus in the knee. Both players had surgery and should be ready in plenty of time for offseason workouts. Now the question remains if that will be with Buffalo. Urbik is a restricted free agent while Bell is unrestricted. Both players say they want to be back. Another injured unrestricted free agent that says he wants to return is Scott Chandler. The knee injury suffered in the finale was not serious and doesn't need surgery. He is sore but should be fine in a couple of weeks. We will continue to update our injury page throughout the offseason as players rehab. Chan Gailey said yesterday he expects all injured players to be healthy by training camp. Injury Page.

Johnson On WGR: Stevie Johnson ducked out on the media at locker cleanout but he kept his committment to WGR radio and was on this afternoon. He said all he wanted to do was say Happy New Year to everyone. He knew he would be fined but didn't expect a penalty since he didn't get called for one last year when he wrote on his shirt. He has no bad feelings about being benched he just didn't understand getting a flag thrown at him. The ref told him it was excessive celebration because too many people were around and he used a prop. He doesn't understand that his undershirt is a prop. He doesn't feel it should be a penalty. He wants them to be consistent with the rules. He said why would he go out and get a penalty knowing it would get him benched. What he did he felt would hurt only him with a fine but never thought he'd get a flag. He admits he has to change his style for the rest of his career since the NFL won't change. He needs to decide what road he is going to take as far as how flashy he will be. Getting benched gave him some mixed emotions but in the end of the day Gailey was right and his punishment has changed his mindset.

Edwards Out; Wannstedt In: Chan Gailey announced today that he has relieved George Edwards of his duties as Defensive Coordinator of the Bills. Dave Wannstedt will take over the role, he coached the inside linebackers this year and will remain the assistant head coach. This move is not a surprise as the Bills defense gave up more points in the past two years than almost any other time in club history. Gailey said the team is in the process of reevaluating the entire coaching staff. They will look at possibly going back to the 4-3 but no decision will be made right now. Wannstedt is traditionally a 4-3 coach. On Stevie Johnson Gailey said he'd like him back but with some stipulations. He said they have to look at the entire body of work when deciding whether to resign him or not. He said he told Johnson he has to get things under control whether he is in Buffalo or elsewhere. He feels Ryan Fitzpatrick will be very efficient at quarterback as they get better as an entire football team. The coach expects Shawne Merriman to be back next year. He expects all injured players to be ready in time for training camp. The coach feels when healthy they are stronger on both sides of the line and it is a work in progress at left tackle. Do you think the move at defensive coordinator was the right one? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know.

Nix To Speak To Media Next Monday: Buddy Nix briefly addressed the media during locker cleanout day today. He said he will meet with the players today and the coaches tomorrow. They will then have their usual organizational meeting with Ralph Wilson. He will have a thorough meeting with the media next Monday to go over personnel issues. In other cleanout day news, Ryan Fitzpatrick said he wants his top receiver back. Stevie Johnson did not make himself available to the media. Scott Chandler said he's having an MRI on his knee. It's sore but he doesn't think it will need surgery. Injury Page.

Locker Cleanout Day: The most depressing day of the year, locker cleanout day is today at One Bills Drive. The players will be at the stadium to talk to the media and clean out their locker. We will have the highlights throughout the day here and on our twitter feed.

Bills Opponents: The teams the Bills will be playing in the 2012 season is now set. When they play will be determined when the schedule is released in April. The Bills will host Kansas City, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Seattle, St. Louis, Miami, New England, and the NY Jets. They will travel to Cleveland, Houston, Indianapolis, Arizona, San Francisco, Miami, New England, and the NY Jets.

Bills To Draft 10th: The draft order is now set as well. The Bills will pick 10th in the first round of April's draft. They finished 6-10 along with Carolina and Miami but pick behind those teams based on strength of schedule. Those two teams will have coin flip to see who picks 8th and who picks 9th. The three teams will rotate picks every round.
