Training Camp Gets Underway

Batten Banged Up: Rookie LB Danny Batten left today's practice early with a shoulder injury. Eric Wood did not practice as he got his first day off since camp began. Chan Gailey had said Wood would require extra rest early on as he eases back in playing shape after overcoming a broken leg last season. The defense ruled the day during this afternoon's lone practice as they recorded four interceptions and had the upper hand on the offense.

Team Continues To Put Pads On: Today will be the fifth training camp practice in four days and in all likelihood they will be putting the pads on once again when they hit the field. Chan Gailey is a big believer in practicing with pads on so the players can get used to them again and he feels it helps avoid injuries. He feels to be a physical football team you need to hit and you need to have the pads on. He feels walktrhoughs help but to understand the game and leverage you need to be in pads. The players aren't complaining since they know the way they used to do things around there have not been working over the past decade.

Spiller Hold Out To Linger? The Bills hit the field for one practice this afternoon at 3 and one again tomorrow afternoon at the same time. They will likely do so without C.J. Spiller in the fold. ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that his holdout may last a while despite the recent rash of first round picks signing contracts. As of this morning more than half of the first round picks were signed including the 8th and 11th picks.

Stroud Practices At Night: Marcus Stroud was back on the practice field tonight after missing the morning session. Demetrius Bell was held out as well as they ease him back into game shape. Keith Ellison, Paul Posluszny, and Chris Kelsay remained sidelined. Spencer Johnson left early after tweaking a leg muscle. Chan Gailey said he hopes it's something that only keeps him out a few days or a week. Donovan Woods practiced with his teammates for the first time and picked off a pass in 7 on 7 drills. Injury Page.

Linebacker Swap: The Bills have severed ties with former fifth round pick Nic Harris. The linebacker was waived after failing his physical with the team. He had been placed on the active PUP list yesterday. He struggled in his return from a knee injury late last season. The team replaced him with veteran inside linebacker Donovan Woods. He appeared in six games the past two years mostly on special teams for the Steelers. He was released last week by the Cowboys. If Harris clears waivers in 24 hours the team can release him or put him on the reserved PUP list ending his season. Front Office Page.

First Camp Scrum: Things got a bit physical during this morning's practice at St. Johns Fisher College. The first scrum took place when Aaron Maybin hit Fred Jackson to the ground. Geoff Hangartner than went after Maybin but order was restored shortly. There were a lot of yelling going on back and forth. Eric Wood screamed at Maybin to return some of the money he didn't earn last year according to ESPN's Tim Graham. All seemed to be forgiven at the end of practice. What do you think this fight means? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know!

Schobel Returning? It looks more and more likely that Aaron Schobel is coming back. NFL.com's Jason La Canfora is reporting that sources told him Schobel was looking at rentals in the Buffalo area and may already have a place. Schobel's change of heart this week came after various interviews in which he said he was now leaning towards coming back. He is expected to make a final decision within a week but mentioned he wouldn't return until mid-August when his kids go back to school.

Pitts Finds A Job: OL Chester Pitts, who was in for a visit early this week, has found a job. He has signed with the Seattle Seahawks. The Bills were looking at him as possible depth on the interior of the offensive line.

Stroud Not Practicing: Marcus Stroud is not taking part in this morning's closed practice. No word yet on why he is sidelined. Paul Posluszny, Keith Ellison, and Chris Kelsay are also watching this morning. The Bills hit the field for their first evening practice today. Tickets are required for admission. The days they practice at night they hold a closed morning full workout. Today is the first one of those.

Johnson No. 2 Receiver: Chan Gailey addressed the media following today's first training camp practice. It was in full pads and Gailey said it was sluggish. He confirmed that Trent Edwards is the number one quarterback and Steve Johnson was the number two wideout. He said Johnson earned that right in OTAs. He also felt Edwards made more plays in the offseason workouts. The coach said the competition and any spots is not over. Gailey confirmed that Chris Kelsay is out indefinitely after suffering a shoulder injury today. Depth Chart.

Edwards Confirmed No. 1: Nick Mendola of WECK-AM is reporting on twitter that according to Brian Brohm, Trent Edwards is the number one quarterback and he will rotate at number two with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Kelsay Out Indefinitely: The first injury of camp took place as Chris Kelsay left practice early and had an ice pack on his shoulder. After practice he was pronounced as out indefinitely.

Edwards Gets First Reps: Trent Edwards got the first reps with the first team as training camp got underway this afternoon with the first workout in full pads. It started with a walk through with Edwards being followed by Ryan Fitzpatrick on the field for the offense. We will have more from the first day of camp later on.

Harris, Corto On PUP: The injury to Paul Posluszny is not bad enough to land him on the active PUP list but two teammates are not so lucky. Jon Corto and Nic Harris are on the list which keeps them on the 80 man roster. Harris still isn't all the way back from knee surgery after an injury late last season. Corto had wrist surgery recently and isn't expected to be ready until the third preseason game. Keith Ellison was sidelined for the first practice as he remains out with an undisclosed injury. Aaron Schobel has been placed on the reserve/did not report list as he continues to contemplate returning to the team in mid August. Injury Page.

Posluszny Recovering: The Bills announced that linebacker Paul Posluszny will be limited at camp for the first few weeks as he recovers from a groin sugery he had 2 weeks ago. Posluszny suffered the injury durring the spring training sessions and felt that surgery was the best option to prevent a small problem from getting worse. The recovery is not expected to impact the linebacker's readiness for the season

Will Schobel Return? Projected linebacker Aaron Schobel spoke with the media and indicated that he may be open to playing one more season of football this year. Several months ago Schobel appeared to be leaning towards retirement, but told the Associated Press on Wednesday that if the Bills wanted him back he might like to play. Schobel indicated that he would make a decision in mid August.

Troup Signs Deal: Bills second round pick Torell Troup become the newest Buffalo Bill today by agreeing to terms with the club. The Bills have not yet announced the deal and do not provide financial terms of their contracts, but sources say it is a 4 year deal worth up to $4.61 million with $2.6 in guaranteed money. Troup is expected to play nose tackle in the new 3-4 defensive alignment and it appears that the future anchor of the defensive line will not miss any practices.

Camp Opens: Training camp officially starts today at St. John Fisher with both rookies and veterans expected to report. The Bills' top 2 draft picks, C.J. Spiller and Torell Troup, will likely miss the start of camp as neither has agreed to a contract with the Bills. It is expected that a deal with Troup could happen fairly quickly, while Spiller's deal will likely take longer as a number of first round picks remain unsigned and this has caused the rookie market to remain unsettled. Also expected to miss the start of training camp is Aaron Schobel who has shown no signs of returning to the team but has also not made any formal announcement about retiring.

Owens Catches On: Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens has found a home for the 2010 NFL season. After working out with Cincinnatti quarterback Carson Palmer, the Bengals have signed the journeyman receiver to a one year deal to become a Bengal. The deal is reportedly worth $2 million in base salary with another $2 million possible in incentives.

Pitts Visits: The Bills hosted free agent offensive lineman Chester Pitts on Monday. Pitts was a second round draft selection of the Houston Texans and played left guard and left tackle before suffering a knee injury last season. It is believed that the Bills are looking at Pitts for offensive line depth. Pitts visited with 2 other teams last week but remains unsigned.
