NEWS ARCHIVES - JULY 28TH - AUG 3RD, 2008 PREVIOUS WEEK

Bowen Suffers Serious Injury; Spragan Signed

Players Get Day Off: The players are relaxing with a rare day off today from training camp. Dick Jauron said it's really nice to give them the day and they definitely deserve it. Of course the team is required to give them some days off in camp it is in the CBA. Jauron said the team would have gotten the day even if they weren't required to give it to them. The players need to be back in camp tonight for film work and hit the practice field with a morning walk-thru tomorrow and an afternoon practice session.

Saturday August 2, 2008

Bills Hold Intra-Squad Scrimmage: The Bills held an intra-squad scrimmage for the last 18 plays of practice today. Young veterans and rookies participated and tackling to the ground was permitted. It was good for them to get extra reps and get some hitting in. Not participating in practice were Angelo Crowell, James Hardy, J.P. Losman, and Will James because of their various bumps and bruises. Copeland Bryan left practice early with an apparent hamstring injury Injury Page.

Bills Sign Spragan: The Bills have announced that they have reached an agreement with free agent linebacker Donnie Spragan on a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the Buffalo News reports it's a one year, $600,000 deal The seven year veteran spent his first three years with Denver and the last three years with Miami. He made five starts for the Dolphins last year and can play all there linebacker positions. He has made 39 starts the past four years and has never missed a game in his career. He arrived in camp before this morning's practice session. The move was necessary as Alvin Bowen is expected to miss the season after suffering a serious knee injury yesterday. The team is thin on the outside with Angelo Crowell also banged up. The Bills did have an open roster spot.

James Suffers Groin Injury: Will James left practice early today after suffering a groin injury. It's too early to tell the seriousness of the injury. Kawika Mitchell was limited with general soreness. A few veterans were given a break by limiting their practice times today.

Bowen Suffers Knee Injury: The Bills suffered their first serious injury of training camp during this afternoon's practice. 5th round pick Alvin Bowen was carted off the field after injuring his knee. Dick Jauron said he anticipates that he will miss the season. The Bills were counting on Bowen to help out on special teams. It was a non contact injury that happened when he tried to cut. He was screaming in pain immediately according to the team's website. In other injury news, Ko Simpson was back on the field fully this afternoon as it appears his ankle is fine. James Hardy, Kawika Mitchell, and Steve Johnson took part in a limited basis. Injury Page.

Simpson, Hardy Participate: After missing last night's practice, James Hardy and Ko Simpson both took part in this morning's walk-thru according to the team's website. Hardy was held out as a precaution last night because of tightness in his hamstring. Simpson had his surgically repaired ankle looked at but the MRI came back negative. Injury Page.

Passing Game Improves: The passing game showed marked improvement last night from what they accomplished during the first night practice on Tuesday. Trent Edwards continues to develop good chemistry with Lee Evans who caught two touchdown passes. The running game continues to struggle a bit against the defense. Because of injuries and absences players like Chris Ellis, George Wilson, and Demetrius Bell received more reps.

Simpson Has MRI: Ko Simpson was one of the many players to miss last night's practice. He went to have an MRI on his surgically repaired ankle. It appears the move was just to give him and the team piece of mind. Dick Jauron said he believes the results were negative but he hadn't talked to the doctors as of the end of last night's practice. Steve Johnson and Angelo Crowell continue to be held out because of knee problems. Johnson is a day or two away from returning. Crowell's problem is a concern since he also had it last year in camp. James Hardy sat out last night's practice as well. He tweaked his hamstring a little bit and it never got loose so they decided to play it safe and keep him out. He expects to practice today but they will be cautious about it so he doesn't pull it. Shaun Nua missed the workout with a leg injury suffered during Wednesday's workout. Aaron Schobel remains out of camp because of a death in his family. Injury Page.

Thursday July 31, 2008

Night Practice Ahead: The Bills will hold a morning walk-thru today and then a full night practice at 7pm. The offense looks to rebound after two poor practices in a row. Trent Edwards said a reason for the struggle on Tuesday night was getting used to the environment of the night practice. They hopefully will perform better tonight.

Wednesday July 30, 2008

Simpson, Losman Return: During today's practice session the run defense shined according to the team's website. J.P. Losman and Ko Simpson returned to practice after missing yesterday's session. Angelo Crowell missed his second straight practice with a sore knee. Steve Johnson was also held out and Shaun Nua left early with an apparent leg ailment. Injury Page.

Walker Moves: The Bills sent a message to holdout left tackle Jason Peters. They moved right tackle Langston Walker to the left side. He played that position a few years ago in Oakland and feels comfortable doing it. He said he's keeping the position warm until Peters returns. Kirk Chambers moved over to first team at right tackle.

Offense Struggles Under The Lights: In front of more than 3,000 people during the first night practice of training campt he offense didn't bring their A game. Trent Edwards struggled with his accuracy, and receivers struggled with drops. Only two touchdowns were scored offensively one coming during red zone drills. Edwards chalked up the struggles to new plays being implemented that day and not being used to practicing at night in front of all the fans.

Bumps And Bruises Pile Up: Camp is less than a week old and players are starting to get banged up. J.P. Losman and Angelo Crowell were held out of last night's practice and Ko Simpson left early. Losman missed the practice with a swollen thumb suffered Monday night. He is considered day to day according to Dick Jauron. Crowell was held out as a precaution due to soreness in his left knee. Simpson had the scariest injury but it isn't too serious. He jammed the same ankle he broke last year and was taken out as a precaution as well. Injury Page.

Tuesday July 29, 2008

Losman Sits Out Walk-thru: Chris Brown reports on the team's website that J.P. Losman did not take part in this morning's walk-thru. He injured his thumb during yesterday's practice but it doesn't appear serious. It appears that Gibran Hamdan may get 2nd team reps during tonight's first night practice. Injury Page.

Night Practice Tickets: The Bills announced today that tickets for the night practice on Sunday Aug. 17th will be made available this Friday. Tickets are free and available at participating Wilson Farms stores by saying "Bud Light Night Practice". Tickets are limited to four per person.

TEs To Play FB: Last year the Bills didn't have a fullback so they used tight ends in the H-back role. With the new inclusion of a fullback to the offense it was thought the tight ends would just stay on the line but that isn't the case. Dick Jauron said tight ends will learn the fullback position as well, especially two of them presumed to be Derek Schouman and Derek Fine. This will add flexibility and maybe allow the team to carry just one fullback which would likely be Darian Barnes.

Monday July 28, 2008

Sirius NFL Radio At Camp: It was a busy day at camp as besides the commissioner being at camp, Sirius NFL radio was at camp taking in the practice and doing four hours of live coverage. Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan liked what they saw and praised several players including Derek Fine, Xavier Omon, Paul Posluzny, Jabari Greer, Donte Whitner, Marcus Stroud and Reggie Corner. Kirwan warned that James Hardy and Leodis McKelvin will have growing pains and neither will likely start when the season starts. Neither guy thinks much of John McCargo.

First Pad Practice In The Books: The pads were finally popping at St. John Fisher College as the team worked out in pads for the first time this training camp. There were one on one blocking and pass rushing drills for the first time this summer. According to the team's website FB Darian Barnes shined in this session. The practice was cut short because of lightning in the area and it was finished in walk through mode inside the fieldhouse. J.P. Losman nicked his thumb during the session and had it taped up. The team will have their first night practice tomorrow. Injury Page.

Commissioner, Senator Talk About Bills Future: Ralph Wilson, commissioner Roger Goodell, and Senator Chuck Schumer emerged from a meeting before today's practice session and spoke to the media. Schumer said he's confident the Bills will be in Buffalo for a very long time thanks to Goodell and Wilson. He also feels the Toronto games are centered around keeping the Bills in Buffalo. Goodell chose the Bills for his first training camp visit of the year and the Western New York native said it was good to be home. The discussions the three men had centered around the future of the team, Goodell pronounced that the Bills are doing real good thanks to the regionalization effort. He feels it makes the team stronger in Western New York which is good news for Bills fans. They also discussed what they still need to do to keep the team successful in Western New York. The commissioner mentioned many times in the short media session that everything is being done to keep the team strong, viable, and successful in Western New York. Do you think he means it and it will work? Take our poll on our homepage and let us know what you think!

No Discipline For Lynch: While visiting Bills training camp today, commissioner Roger Goodell said that there will be no league disciplinary action taken against Marshawn Lynch. The violation that Lynch pleaded guilty to does not violate the league's personal conduct policy. Goodell met with Lynch before practice and feels the running back knows what it means to be an NFL player and understands the responsibility with that.

Wilson On Hand: The Bills hit the practice field for the first time in pads this morning. Expected to be in attendance today is owner Ralph Wilson. He will be meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and Senator Chuck Schumer at camp today. This meeting was setup a couple of months ago to talk about the team's long term future in Western New York.
