Bills Add Three To Administration

Sunday March 18, 2018

Bills Hosting A Center: With a hole created in the middle of the offensive line thanks to the forced retirement of Eric Wood, the Bills are hosting former Bengals center Russell Bodine on a free agent visit today and tomorrow. Ian Rapoport reported the visit. Bodine has started every game at center for Cincinnati the past four years. He was drafted by them in the fourth round of the 2014 draft. The Bills can use Ryan Groy at center as he was the backup for Wood last year.

Jets Move Up To 3: In a move that was made clearly to keep the Bills at bay, the Jets moved up from the 6th spot to the third spot in the draft as they gave the Colts three second round picks to make the move. The Jets paid a premium spot for the move three spots. The Bills only hope to get ahead of them is to make a deal with the Giants for the #2 spot but that may be cost prohibitive to go up 10 spots based on what the Jets paid to go up 3. Getting their guy at QB appears unlikely unless they mortgage the farm and I don't think Brandon Beane is ready to do that.It appears the Bills may have to stay put at 12 or move up into the lower half of the top 10 to get what could be their 2nd or 3rd choice at QB.

Friday March 16, 2018

Bills Hosting Compton: After losing Preston Brown the Bills have decided to bring in free agent LB Wil Compton for a visit. He was teammates with recently signed DE Trent Murphy with the Redskins. The Bills really have no replacement in the middle of the defense for Brown as linebacker is perhaps the weakest position on the team.

Wright To Raiders: The Bills have lost their third unrestricted free agent as Shareece Wright went to the Raiders. The Bills lose a decent depth player at the cornerback spot.

Brown To Cincy: The Bills have lost their second unrestricted free agent as Preston Brown has decided to go closer to home and has signed a one year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. He thanked Buffalo for his four years with the team. The Bills reportedly made him an offer but it likely wasn't for enough money as Brandon Beane said today that they are low on money for free agent signings. The team continued to fill out the depth at running back today by re-signing Taiwan Jones after re-signing Travaris Cadet.

Beane Presser: He spoke about the trade of Tyrod Taylor and publicly thanked him while saying he will root for him the rest of his career. On A.J. McCarron he called him a competitor with an edge on him that he loves. He says McCarron and Nate Peterman will compete and they will see what else happens before the season. They took the slow, methodical approach to the QB decision and they are very happy that got McCarron. They have done their recon on all positions for the draft and are still doing it. He has put the draft on the back burner a bit while focusing on free agency. Now that they have spent their money they are back to focusing on the draft. He has met all the top QBs available but not enough. He said he doesn't know what they are doing yet as to which prospect they want and on whether or not they will move up again. He doesn't look at AJ as the bridge this is a chance for him to come in and compete. He isn't playing behind an established person like he was when he played behind Dalton. On the trade with Cincy he called it a win win and said he can never have enough assets. He knows everyone assumes they are going higher but he doesn't know that at this time. He does know there are many prospects that wouldn't make it to 21 that they may be able to get at 12. The moves on the defensive line were to wreak havoc on the defensive line. He wouldn't get into the report that there is an offer on the table for Preston Brown. He did say they do want him back. They are now low on money so they can only do low level things at this time. They have to save money for draft picks and he likes to hold some money back for injuries during the season.

Cadet Back: Adam Schefter reports that the Bills have agreed to a one year deal with Travaris Cadet bringing him back to Buffalo. He is the 2nd unrestricted free agents to re-sign with the team and fills out the depth chart at running back with LeSean McCoy and Chris Ivory. He suffered a gruesome broken leg and fractured ankle on Christmas Eve. Schefter reports he has made a very quick recovery and is already running full speed.

Thursday March 15, 2018

Incognito Restructures: Day two of free agency was a quiet one for the Bills. They signed nobody and didn't lose anybody. Mike Garofolo reported that the Bills restructured the final year of Richie Incognito's contract to lower his cap figure. News also leaked about the contract details surrounding the signing of Star Lotulelei. His deal is for five years and worth $50 Million with half of that guaranteed. It makes him the highest paid player on the roster. His deal has cap hits of $6.7 million this year and $11.5 million in 2019, $10.1 million in 2020, $10.85 million in 2021 and $10.85 million in 2022.

Free Agency Day 2: The Bills were busy as free agency started and day two of free agency is usually not as frantic but deals get done. The Bills are likely done with big splashes but we are still waiting to see where the Bills unrestricted free agents go. So far only Seantrel Henderson has reportedly found a home. The big names to watch today are E.J. Gaines and Preston Brown. There is still a possiblility the Bills bring back a few of their own besides Kyle Williams who re-signed on Tuesday. That leaves 16 players to watch as free agency progresses.

Wednesday March 14, 2018

Bills Sign McCarron: The Bills finally have a second quarterback and it is one of the bigger name free agents. The team has agreed to a two year deal with former Bengals signal caller AJ McCarron. He started one playoff game for the Bengals when Andy Dalton was injured. He was initially a restricted free agent but filed a grievance and was named an unrestricted free agent. He will be penciled in as the starter right now and even if they get a QB very high in the draft he would likely still be the starter on opening day. He is the perfect bridge quarterback with some upside potential that could allow him to be very successful. He has the best upside of any of the bridge QBs available. His signing does not change their desire to move up into the top five and draft their QB of the future. McCarron could develop into their QB of the present. The Bills reportedly gave McCarron a two year deal worth $10 Million which is pretty much backup QB money.

Bills Add Two More: The Bills announced the trading of Tyrod Taylor and Cordy Glenn when the league year started at 4pm. They also announced the signings that were reported yesterday as Rafael Bush and Star Lotulelei. They also added two more players today signing pass rushing DE Trent Murphy and Special teams LB Julian Stanford. Murphy agreed to a 3 year, $21 Million deal which is starter money. He missed all of last year after tearing his ACL and MCL in August. He also served a four game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy while injured. In 2016 with the Redskins he had nine sacks and three forced fumbles and adds a big pass rushing threat if he can return to form. Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reports the signing of Murphy does not mean they are looking to move on from Jerry Hughes or Shaq Lawson as they like to rotate defensive linemen. Stanford is a special teams player from the Jets who took over 80% of the special teams snaps but less than 10% of the defensive snaps last year. He has 69 career tackles and signed a 2 year deal worth $3 Million with just $550,000 guaranteed. Front Office Page. Depth Chart.

League Year Begins Today: The NFL begins their 2018 year officially today. The headline of that is the start of free agency at 4pm. That is when all the deals you have heard about the past week become official. The Tyrod Taylor and Cordy Glenn trades along with the signings of Star Lotulelei and Rafael Bush. The signing of Kyle Williams was already announced since he was their own free agent. Every team needs to be under the $177.2 million for their top 51 salary players. The Bills were approximately $37 Million under before the three deals they made yesterday. Front Office Page.

Tuesday March 13, 2018

Henderson To Texans: The Bills have already lost one of their unrestricted free agents. Seantrel Henderson has agreed to terms with the Texans. The Bills are quickly running out of options for a veteran quarterback as most of the top free agents are off the market. The Jets signed two of them, Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. That leaves just Matt Moore and A.J. McCarron as viable options. The Bills could also be thinking about going with Nate Peterman and a top rookie next year as well which is a dangerous proposition.

Bills Add Safety: The Bills agreed to terms with a second free agent late this afternoon as they added Saints safety Rafael Bush. He adds much needed depth at the position with Colt Anderson and Shamarko Thomas set to hit the market tomorrow. The deal is reportedly a two year contract worth $4.5 Million. He is 30 years old and played for Atlanta, Detroit, Denver, and had two stints with New Orleans. He has three career interceptions.

Bills Tender Four: The Bills were in an unusual spot where they do not have any restricted free agents but they do have four exclusive rights free agents and have tendered all four of them. That means Nick O'Leary, Logan Thomas, Lafayette Pitts, and Eddie Yarbrough are locked in to the Bills for this season.

Kyle Back: The Bills announced that they have brought back Kyle Williams. He signed a one year deal worth $6 Million with $5 Million guaranteed reportedly. He spoke to the media on a conference call and said "Buffalo is home. It's where I want to be. It's where I want to win." He indicated he planned on coming back at the end of the season. He went on to say, "As eloquently as I can put it, I haven’t exhausted myself in my pursuit of what my dream is, in playing this game, playing for this organization and chasing a championship."

Bills Agree To Terms With DT: Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane have dipped into their Carolina roots for their first big free agent signing. They have agreed to a five year deal with run stuffing defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. He fills the hole created when Marcell Dareus was traded during last season. Loculeleli was a first round pick of the Panthers in 2013 and McDermott was his defensive coordinator. The terms of the contract were not released and it will become official when the league year starts tomorrow at 4pm. Depth Chart. Front Office Page.

Monday March 12, 2018

Glenn traded to Cincy: The Bills continue to prepare to move up for their franchise QB. The latest move was trading Cordy Glenn to the Bengals. In the deal they swap first round picks the Bills give them their 21st pick and get their 12th. The Bills also give them their 5th round pick, (they had two) and get a 6th rounder (which they didn't have before). If there was any doubt that they are going to move up into the top five to get that QB there can't be anymore. They now have the 12th and 22nd pick in the draft which should be enough capital to move up without giving up any of their 2nd round picks. Glenn couldn't stay healthy and he likely didn't fit into the scheme. The development of Dion Dawkins made him expendable and he will move to left tackle. The move opens up even more cap space as well. Sal Capaccio reports they take a $9.6M dead cap hit but clear $4.85M in cap space that should put them around $37 Million in space for free agency.
