Bills Host Minicamp

Thursday June 14, 2018

Minicamp Over: The Bills closed out minicamp in fine fashion as Josh Allen hit Austin Proehl on a long touchdown bomb on the final play of the three day mandatory camp. The players are now off for the next six weeks before the start of training camp. Allen commanded the third team offense which saw the bulk of the work on the final day. Allen also hit Ray-Ray McCloud for a score during a two minute drill. Sean McDermott said before the practice that they will open training camp with the same setup for the quarterbacks which means A.J. McCarron and Nate Peterman will split first team reps and Allen will be with the threes but he is expected to mix in some with the first team. The coach also said that he has no reason to think that Zay Jones won't be ready for the start of camp.

Training Camp Schedule Released: The Bills have released their training camp schedule and will begin camp with an evening practice beginning at 5:30pm on Thursday July 26th. Camp will be at St. Johns Fisher College through August 15th. Opening night will be the only evening practice at the collge as most practices will take place at 8:45am with a few at 2:15pm. The team will hold an evening practice at New Era Field on Friday August 3rd and a practice at the ADPRO training center on August 10th.

Minicamp Underway: The three day mandatory minicamp is underway at One Bills Drive and there are no unexcused absences. Many players were not participating because of injury including DT Tenny Palepoi with an illness, WR Zay Jones and TE Logan Thomas after knee surgery, WR Malachi Dupre and LB Matt Milano with hamstring injuries. DE Trent Murphy remains limited as he recovers from ACL surgery. Sean McDermott said before practice that Josh Allen will see some time with the ones because that was the plan and he earned it. He also added they have not held anything back from him. The majority of his reps remain with the threes. Nate Peterman got the first shot with the ones in 11 on 11 drills today. Mike Rodak tweeted that Allen got four reps with the ones and completed three of four passes. He hit Kelvin Benjamin on a bomb but followed it up with a tipped pass that was intercepted by fellow first rounder Tremaine Edmunds. McDermott admitted there will come a time in training camp that he needs to pick a starter so there can be some continuity. The coach said he remains very impressed with Tre'Davious White as there has been no drop off as he prepares for his second season. The Bills continue to rotate wide receivers with the first team as they look for the right combination. Ryan Groy got first shot at center today.

Mandatory Minicamp: The offseason program is just about over but it ends with the only three day practice session that is mandatory for all players to attend. The Bills will hold their three day minicamp beginning tomorrow and ending on Thursday. At that point the players will be off until the start of training camp in late July. The coaches will also get a chance to take some time off as well. Look for the team to release the entire training camp practice schedule sometime this week. As far as the minicamp schedule goes, the team will practice at Noon each day. Sean McDermott will address the media before tomorrow's practice. Players will be available post practice in the locker room while the quarterbacks and LeSean McCoy will be at the fieldhouse podium post practice tomorrow.

Wood Finally Released: John Wawrow of the Associated Press was the first to report that the Bills have finally released Eric Wood after reportedly reaching an injury settlement. Doing it a day before June 1st makes the entire cap hit on this year's book instead of it being spread out over two years. He was expected to count $8.875 million against the salary cap in 2018 had he played, but that figure will now be $10.391 million according to the Buffalo News. The Bills reportedly have over $46 Million in dead money on their cap now that is twice as much as any other team. The good news is they clear it all now and will have lots of cap space next year.

Thomas Surgery: The Bills will be without TE Logan Thomas for the rest of the spring workouts after he underwent knee surgery. It is unknown if the injury has a chance to linger into training camp.

Daboll Press Conferences: New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and returning defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier addressed the media today before practice. Daboll was up first and said about Josh Allen that he's a mature guy and he's handled his responsibilities the right way, listens to everyone, and corrects his mistakes. He's still running with the threes at this time. The coach said they are still putting in the offense and it is ever changing in today's NFL. He talked about being raised in Western New York and loving this team and being excited to be here. He said they need to have a variety in everything they do and need an expansive playbook. Their job is to see what players do, go back and look at it, and make the needed adjustments. He wouldn't call where players are lining up right now a depth chart, he called it a rep chart. He said everyone is kind've mixed together at this point as they provide them a good base so they can understand the entire system.

Frazier Presser: Leslie Frazier followed Daboll and said he is pleased with the progress they have made up to this point but there is a lot of work to be done and a lot of practices to go but they are on pace at this time. On Tremaine Edwards he thinks he's done a great job the way he has come in and meshed with his teammates. He feels he's handled the big responsibility of middle linebacker very well so far especially as a rookie. It will be an ongoing learning curve as everyone gels together as a defense. He likes how Edwards has been able to take what he learned in the classroom and use it on the field similiar to what Tre'Davious White did last year as a rookie. He likes the attitude that Shaq Lawson has come in with and feels he's in a good frame of mind. On Harrison Phillips he called him extremely talented and bright and they have high hopes for him. Having Kyle Williams in the room is a plus for Phillips.

Week 2 Of OTAs Wraps: The Bills are wrapping up their second of three weeks of organized team activities today in Orchard Park. The media will be allowed at today's practice session and will speak with both the offensive and defensive coordinators as well as some players.
