Wood Forces To Retire Because Of Neck Injury

Sunday January 28, 2018

Shady Scores: LeSean McCoy scored a touchdown on a 2 yard jaunt in the third quarter of the Pro Bowl to help lead the AFC to 24-23 comeback win over the NFC. Shady led all AFC rushers with a whopping seven yards on three carries as usually is the case in the All Star game it was an almost exclusively an aerial attack. Richie Incognito played right guard in the game instead of his usual left guard spot. He also played on the right side for the majority of last year's Pro Bowl as well.

Another Front Office Man Chased: The Bills lost one member of their front office staff and now may lose another. A few weeks after Brian Gaine left to become the Texans GM, Tom Pelissero and Mike Rapoport of the NFL Network report that the Panthers will likely interview Bills assistant director of college scouting Lake Dawson. He is one of an initial list of at least four candidates for the job. Dawson has interviewed for four GM jobs in the past.

Wood Statement: Eric Wood had two tweets today to announce his retirement. He will speak at One Bills Drive on Monday. The Bills announced that press conference will be at 1pm with Wood, Brandon Beane, and Sean McDermott. We will have snippets and complete coverage from that press conference right here. Tim Graham reports Wood knew he was going to retire after his season ending physical discovered the injury. He held out in case he got the call to play in the Pro Bowl. He thought that would be a fitting end to his career.

Wood Has Career Ending Injury: Scout Fantasy Sports continues to be on top of today's devastating injury news and they were also the first to report that Eric Wood is the player who suffered a career ending neck injury. Adam Schefter reports that it isn't from a specific injury or accident but it is partly from wear and tear and is a complicated medical situation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Wood who recently signed a contract extension with the team and has been the anchor of the offensive line. He will be tough to replace on the field and even tougher to replace in the locker room. The team does have Ryan Groy on the roster as the backup center and they paid heavily to keep him as a restricted free agent then didn't play him at guard last year.

Career Ending Injury Reported: Scout Fantasy Sports was the first to report that a Bills offensive starter suffered a very serious injury and there will be a press conference on Monday. The report has been verified by several members of the Western New York media as sources confirmed the story to them. Scout Fantasy Sports later tweeted that it is a career ending injury. They still can't or won't release the name of the player and it isn't clear who is holding the press conference. It is also unknown if this is a new injury or something that a player suffered during the season. In all likelihood it isn't LeSean McCoy or Richie Incognito who are at the Pro Bowl in Orlando. The worst possible players this could be besides the Pro Bowlers would be Kelvin Benjamin, Dion Dawkins, or Eric Wood. Two players with chronic injuries that it could be are Cordy Glenn and Charles Clay. Hopefully the name of the player breaks real soon as Bills Mafia is on pins and needles.

Beane At Senior Bowl: Brandon Beane spoke to the media last night from the Senior Bowl and tried to temper enthusiasm for the Bills moving up in the draft for a quarterback. He said he hasn't spoken to any GMs at this time since he is still evaluating the prospects and doesn't have a value on the players yet. To move up from where they are they would have to feel real good about it. There are many trade value charts, the baseline is the Jimmy Johnson but everybody has their own value. You need a partner to move up and they may ask for a kings ransom that doesn't make sense for them. The quarterback is a layered piece like all the intangables and leadership. Do they make players around them better, have they taken snaps from center. It's a big learning curve for a lot of QBs so they need to see where they are at. The Senior Bowl is a chance to see the guys from small schools going against the big schools guys. It's a chance to interview guys and to see what they know and how they fit into the culture of the team. Between now, the combine, and the visits they will speak to a wide gamut of guys. On Brian Daboll he said he has a great track record and is a good fit for this team. It's cool he's from Buffalo and they like his energy and a lot of things he talked about. The Tyrod Taylor decision is the same as evaluating any other position. They have to look at everything. Tyrod did a lot of good things and things that didn't go right you need to see what happened there. They like Tyrod a lot and he works hard but they are still early in the evaluation process. After the Senior Bowl they will start their free agency prep with their own guys. He will be very aware of the compensatory draft pick formula. He came here this year too late to do anything about it but he's a fan of it.

Daboll At Senior Bowl: New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll spoke to the local media for the first time since being hired. He said you need to be multi-dimensonal and you have to be able to throw it when they know you are going to throw it and run it when they know you are going to run it. You need to have enough schemes to be able to put the best plan into place each week. It comes down to preparation throughout the week. You have to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your team and your opponent. Each year you evaluate what you did well and what you can improve on. He has had a good ride so far and he's thankful to the Pegulas, Brandon, and Sean and is looking forward to getting to work here. He calls Buffalo a real special place to him, it's where he grew up and he loves the place, the community, the fans, and the team. He thinks the vision, principles, and values of this team is awesome and he's excited and ready to go.

McDermott At Senior Bowl: Sean McDermott spoke to the local media at the Senior Bowl today. He didn't seem to rule out the possibility of making more coaching changes. He would not get into the specifics on why he made the change at Offensive coordinator but did say they obviously need to score more points. He also said he would not get into the future of Tyrod Taylor saying they are still evaluating and those decisions would come at some point. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for their QB. Matthew Fairburn of New York Upstate said the Bills have met with QBs Josh Allen, Mason Rudolph, Brandon Silvers, Mike White, Luke Falk, and Kurt Benkert. Fairburn said they have also met with WR James Washington, LB Mike McCray, and DT Harrison Philips so far.

No Hyde In Pro Bowl: The Pro Bowl takes place this Sunday in Orlando and while players are being added to replace members of the Patriots and Eagles that can't play, the Bills are losing a player. Micah Hyde has bowed out for injury reasons. He suffered a concussion in the wildcard loss to Jacksonville. No other Bills player has been added so just LeSean McCoy and Richie Incognito are on the roster at this time for the AFC.

Bills Add One: The Bills have added another reserve/futures player. They have signed S Kelcie McCray. He was most recently with the Seahawks where he played mostly special teams in 2015 and 2016. He also played in Tampa Bay and Kansas City. Front Office Page.

White Honored: Tre'Davious White was named to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie team. He was tied for the most passes defensed by rookies in the league with 18. He led the league with five fourth quarter forced turnovers. He did lose out to New Orleans' CB Marshon Lattimore for the PFW Rookie of the Year award.

Successful Surgery: Zay Jones tweeted that his surgery for a torn labrum was a success. He also tweeted that he will come back stronger. His dad told Bills Wire last week that he has battled the injury all season although the Bills never treated him for it and he wasn't on the injury report for it.
