Bills Get QB Of The Future

Sunday April 29, 2018

Beane, McDermott Presser: Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott spoke to the media after the draft to wrap everything up. Beane began by thanking the entire staff for all their hard work. They put a big emphasis on special teams and versatility in the draft and they were lucky enough for it to fall their way. On the DBs they took McDermott said Taron Johnson projects inside in the slot at first. Siran Neal offers unique flexibility since he's played the unusual combination of linebacker with safety and cornerback. Neal can help on special teams and he's a highly competitive man that stands out from an intangibles standpoint. Beane said the goal was to get the best player but they didn't hide the fact that they wanted to get a quarterback if they could. There were a lot of good players that they saw and liked but other teams got. Later in the draft they tried to get players to fill holes. They were in good shape according to Beane because they didn't have to dip in to a lower round on their board to pick someone in a higher round. If they are doing things right it should be harder to make the roster because the level of competition is elavated. That part comes with putting a team together with different personalities and shaping the roster. They still have areas of concern but will continue to use all avenues to fill holes. Beane said they aren't slotting anyone as starters since it's just April. McDermott believes they have gotten better as a total team effort from food services to the IT department. The culture they are trying to build showed up in the gesture to Pancho Billa last night by Fred Jackson and Andre Reed. On Wyatt Teller they think he will come in and compete at guard while he provides depth there. Beane said how he's known Austin Proehl since he was 8 and he's a really polished route runner who will be a good fit. When asked about the offensive tackle position McDermott said he's comfortable where they are. The players have come in in shape and have some good leadership at the position. Beane feels Josh Allen will have the time to develop with A.J. McCarron and Nathan Peterman here. They have it in the right direction but they haven't arrived by any means the GM said. They won't rush Allen but if he somehow wins the job, he wins it but he has a lot of catching up to do. Allen has taken snaps under center and has done a lot similar to Carson Wentz. He's big and strong but athletic and makes plays on the run as well.

UFA Signings: The draft is now over so the undrafted free agent signings begin in earnest. The Bills won't likely announce their signings until next week but they will trickle over the rest of the weekend. So far they have reportedly signed WR Robert Foster from Alabama among others. Check out our complete, and constantly updated list. UFA Reported Signings.

Proehl Conference Call: The Bils final pick Austin Proehl said he met with the Bills and knew they were looking for a slot guy so he is just blessed to be with the Bills. Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott both worked with his father so he has known them and he respects them and can't wait to play with them. He can't wait to uphold the Bills standard. He is coming off a broken collarbone and it was difficult to deal with but it made him realize how much he loves the game and he's 100 percent healthy. He ran a 4.41 in the regional combine. His dad has been a huge influence on his playing career. Draft Grade.

7th Round Pick: The Bills closed the draft one pick away from Mr. Irrelevant as with the second to last pick in the draft (255th overall) they took North Carolina WR Austin Proehl. They closed the draft with two wide receivers. He is the son of former NFL WR Ricky Proehl. Draft Capsules.

McCloud Conference Call: 6th round pick Ray-Ray McCloud spoke to the media and he said he's just coming to work to do what is asked and he will take advantage of any opportunities that come his way. He said he can play anywhere on offense and even helped out on defense but says he's a wide receiver who is dominant with the ball in his hands. He said he's already spoken to Shaq Lawson.

Teller Conference Call: Wyatt Teller spoke to the media and said he is most comfortable at left guard which is the position vacated by Richie Incognito. He said it's all about the family he will create in Buffalo and he's very excited about it. He called the Bills fans the greatest in the world. He called his family a great support system.

6th Round Pick A WR: The Bills finally addressed the wide receiver situation by taking Clemson's Ray-Ray McCloud. He is very fast and a good returner but doesn't have protypical size for the position. He's a solid all-purpose player who was used in gadget packages at Clemson. Has good straight line speed. Has issues with fumbles and injuries in college. Draft Capsules.

Neal Conference Call: Siran Neal called in to a conference call and said he can't say where he fits in right way but wherever they need him to compete he will. He said the Bills like his ability in run support and he loves the physical part of the game. His job is to bring a hard thump to the guy with the ball. He said he spoke and was worked out by Coach Babich and they had a nice conversation. He knows Buffalo is cold but has never been up there. He can't explain the feeling he got when the Bills drafted him.

Bills Add Guard: The Bills filled a hole at guard by taking their second Virginia Tech player of the draft in Wyatt Teller. He joins teammate Tremaine Edmunds in Buffalo. He's two time All-ACC and adds much needed depth with the retirement of Richie Incognito. He allowed only five pressures last year. Has the ability to drive defenders back with an above average initial surge. He has below average mobility but is a mauler. He has excellent length but a short shuttle time. Can develop into a starter down the line and is a good value pick.

Bills Take Another DB In Rd 5: The Bills took Jacksonville State DB Siran Neal with their first of two fifth round picks. He played corner and safety for the small school but likely is a safety at this level. Active in run support and has also played nickel. He's big and physical with good closing speed and a good tackler. He's very athletic with a huge vertical leaping ability . Draft Capsules.

Johnson Conference Call: The Bills introduced Taron Johnson to the Western New York media on a conference call shortly after getting picked in the 4th round. He will show the Bills he can be versatile and he will play wherever they want him in the defensive backfield but he thinks they see him more in the nickel spot but he feels he can play on the outside too. He tries to play corner like a safety and be as aggressive as possible. He wants to bring that type of play to Buffalo. He had no contact with the Bills during the pre draft process. It was out of the blue when he got the call and he's excited. He said he knows very little about Buffalo NY. He worked out with Tremaine Edmunds and played with Josh Allen in the Senior Bowl. He said the talent level at Weber St. isn't significantly lower than the big schools.

4th Round Pick: Thurman Thomas announced the Bills fourth round pick from Niagara Falls and it was CB Taron Johnson from Weber St. He is a smaller corner that will likely play in the slot which is an area lacking depth. He has speed, is a good tackler and competitive. Struggles finding the football in the air. He's feisty and can play. He is a good run stuffer and is considered tough. They needed depth at corner and took one here as they have now taken three defensive backs in four picks. Draft Page.

Phillilps Conference Call: On his conference call Harrison Phillips spoke about the humbling experience that had him very emotional being drafted by the Buffalo Bills. Phillips said Coach McDermott knocked the water bottle out of his hand when they met and he is anxious and excited to contribute in anyway he can. He has a lot of respect for Bills Mafia and said he's so blessed to be in this situation. He said he can't accept being compared to Kyle Williams who has had a history making career he wants to come in and learn from him and the whole defensive front that has a wealth of knowledge. He has the ability to do more than one thing and he can be disruptive and the fans should be excited about it. In a new defense he will plug in wherever they want him. His passion for the game allowed him to have the most tackles of any defensive tackle in division 1.

Beane, McDermott Presser: Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott addressed the media after they took Harrison Phillips late in the third round of the draft, it was a long wait to get the Stanford player. Beane said it was a cool story with Pancho Villa announcing the pick it sent chills up his spine and they are all praying for him. McDermott said Phillips is the type of guy they look for and the wrestling background is an added benefit because of leverage and mental toughness it brings to the game. The coach said he has to earn his spot and he will go into the rotation. His qualities include strength, intelligence, and he's extremely powerful while being good in the run game. He will go into the room and compete at a position where depth is important for them. He says he's more of a one technique tackle while Kyle Williams is more of a three technique guy. He's competitive and has winning qualities that you feel when you are around him. Beane said he makes a lot of plays for himself and others behind the line of scrimmage. Beane said that while DT wasn't considered a big need they were going with the best player available there. McDermott said they are taking guys that want to come to Buffalo and that is established by the current players in the locker room and the energy around the city. Beanse said honestly they didn't think they could get a QB and Tremaine Edmunds, while keeping two first round picks. They would have considered Edmunds at 12.

Bills Take DT Phillips In Round 3: The Bills had to wait more than three and a half hours tonight before finally making a pick thanks to the two trades up in the first round yesterday. With the fifth to last pick in the third round the Bills took DT Harrison Phillips with the 96th pick in the draft. He visited with the Bills during the process and is a former wrestler which Sean McDermott must love. He's a tackling machine who has tremendous strength. He's a former honorable mention all Pac-12. He will be able to ease into the lineup and learn from Kyle Williams. He will see playing time as a rookie since McDermott loves his DL rotation. He was one of the highest rated players on the board at any position when the Bills picked. Fred Jackson and Andre Reed announced the pick together since they didn't have a 2nd round pick. The Bills honored super fan Pancho Billa who is battling cancer and had him come on stage and gave him a jersey and let him announce the pick which was a great moment. Draft Page.

First Rounders Press Conference: The Bills introduced Josh Allen and Tremaine Edmunds to the media late this afternoon before rounds two and three of the draft where the Bills currently only have one pick late in the third round. Allen said he spent time with Terry and Kim Pegula and luckily for him they liked him. He again said he wished he never put out those tweets as a young kid but said he has always loved his teammates and they have always loved him. Edmunds said he hasn't talked to Josh about the tweets but thinks he's a great person and young people make mistakes. Edmunds says he is looking forward to getting this started. Allen said he would consider speaking to his new teammates about the tweets if he feels it is necessary after meeting his teammates. He puts the mistake on his shoulder and it goes back to when he was young and dumb. When they get to know him they will like the type of person and player he is as he will do whatever it takes to win football games. On two brothers being drafted Edmunds said when his brother was drafted it meant the world to him and his family. Edmunds spoke about being 19 years old but said he is a mature guy who has always been with older people and his family did a good job of raising him to prepare him for this. His dad being a former NFL player is a valuable resource for him. Allen said he has blessed all his life by his family and the people he has been around. Allen feels fortunate to be part of a playoff team. He is looking forward to the challenge and to earn the respect of his teammates and coaches and he will trust them as well. He spoke a lot to Andre Reed during the process and it is ironic he ended up in Buffalo. Allen spoke to Terry Pegula about the tweets and said they wanted to find out what they really knew about him. He reassured them and it got emotional as they went into details about the tweets. He said he's ready to jump into the quarterback room and he will learn from the other players and coaches and will look to help the team win whether it is as a starter or a backup. Edmunds said he is an athletic guy and he feels he can play any of the positions at linebacker going sideline to sideline. He was responsible for making some defensive calls in their no huddle defense in college. Allen said he can get better accuracy by getting his footwork consistent and better. He has been working on it with Jordan Palmer. Allen said he played with a chip on his shoulder at Wyoming because nobody else offered him a scholarship and it helped him playing a little better because it gave him a purpose.

Edmunds, Allen Arrive: Josh Allen and Tremaine Edmunds arrived in Buffalo this afternoon and got a tour of the facility after being met with a standing ovation inside the building at One Bills Drive. Allen will wear the #17 he wore at Wyoming as he said it will keep where he began with him. Edmunds had his choice of three numbers as Jerseys were laid out for him and he chose #49.

Edumunds On WGR This Morning: Tremaine Edmunds was on WGR's Howard Simon Show today. He said last night was everything from him getting drafted to his brother getting drafted later in the first round. He was excited to join the great fanbase of Bills Mafia and can't wait to start this journey. At Virginia Tech they moved him around from inside to outside. He's a versatile, athletic guy who can move around and find ways to make plays and be successful. He did more dropping into coverage than rushing the passer in college. He feels he's a good cover guy but there is always room for improvement. His bloodlines have contributed to his success.

Thursday April 26, 2018

Allen On WGR: Josh Allen appeared on WGR after his pick. He said he's flying out at 7am tomorrow and can't wait to get to Buffalo and said he loves the wings he had when he visited two weeks ago. He said he will do what it takes whether it is playing right away or sitting and learning. Depth Chart. Front Office Page.

Beane, McDermott Presser: Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott addressed the media after the Bills two first round picks. Beane said they are both very good players. Josh Allen is big and makes plays in the pocket and on the run. They feel real good about it and he is a player that is made for Buffalo. All the QBs had a knock with them but they had to pick a guy that they could work with. His makeup will allow him to work on his flaws. His size and athleticism attracted them to him but Rosen was very much a consideration as well. The Bills did more digging on Allen after the tweets came to light. They will not tolerate anything like that and they hope Allen has learned from this. They spoke to him at length today about it and feel they don't represent the player he is now. He feels he can make all the throws and should improve in other areas. McDermott said Tremaine Edmunds is versatile and flexibile and could play inside or outside. The way Tremaine effects QBs in many different ways attracted him to them. The two young men will come in and embed into what they do there and will learn from the things that are done well in Buffalo. McDermott doesn't want anyone to lose sight what the guys already in the locker room are doing. Beane said they talked to some teams that were not willing to move because they had a guy they were convicted to taking. They don't like giving up assets but with Edmunds still there they felt they couldn't wait anymore. They had a lot of different options in different trade talks. They were talking with four or five teams just to find the right spot for them to land.

Bills Trade Back Up For Edmunds: The Bills traded up for the 2nd time in the first round. This time their partner was Baltimore as they moved up from 22nd to 16th and gave them the 65th pick in the draft (the one they got in the Tyrod Taylor deal) and got a 5th rounder in return, the 154th overall. They used it to pick LB Tremaine Edmunds from Virginia Tech at another position of need. He's a big backer who should start at the mike linebacker spot but can play all three linebacker spots. He is long and lean and runs really well. The Bills moved up twice in the first round and still end up with only one less pick than the started the night with. They now have 8 picks but only one tomorrow night instead of the four they originally had. Draft Page.

Allen Presser: Josh Allen told Reporters in Dallas that Bills Mafia is the greatest fanbase in the league and he will give them everything he has. He called it the best day of his life. He said he loves to win and he loves wings so it is a match made in heaven. He said he's humbled and blessed to be a Bill.

It's Allen: The Bills finally pulled the trigger on the first trade of the draft by moving up from 12 to 7 in a deal with Tampa Bay for QB Josh Allen of Wyoming. Josh Rosen was still on the board. The Bills gave the Bucs their 12th overall pick of the draft and both 2nd round picks (53rd and 56th). Beane wanted to keep his second first round pick and did. They also kept both third round picks and get the 2nd to last pick in the draft in return which gives them a 7th round pick which they didn't have. Allen has had accuracy issues but has really good arm strength and can move out of the pocket. He had no off the field issues until racist tweets surfaced today from five years ago. He threw for 5,000 yards the past two years at Wyoming. Allen becomes the highiest QB ever drafted by the Bills. Most Bills fans wanted Rosen but it only matters which one becomes the better quarterback and it's impossible to know right now who will be better. He is very tall but has to work on his footwork. Give Brandon Beane credit he didn't want to give him the 21st overall pick and was able to get his guy three picks later without parting with his second first rounder. He did give up both 2nd round picks but they do have the top pick in the third round which is basically a 2nd rounder.

Bills Reportedly Turn Down Deal: Ian Rapaport and Adam Schefter are both reporting that the Bills tried to get up to the 4th pick in the draft but balked at sending two first round picks to the Browns to move up the 8 spots. Going by the draft value chart that would have been a fair deal. I think they should have made that deal.
