Bills Continue To Fill Out Depth Chart

Saturday March 18, 2017

Bills Sign Holmes: It has finally happened the Bills have signed free agent wide receiver Andre Holmes. It was originally reported as a signing on Wednesday but that was prematurely released by the NFLPA. On Wednesday it was thought to be a 3 year, $4.5M deal but now it is being reported as a 3 year, $6.5M deal. He gets penciled in as the number two wide receiver. At 6'4" he is a big red zone target. He played the past four seasons for the Raiders. His best season was in 2014 when he had 47 receptions for 693 yards. He has 12 career touchdowns and 20 career starts but has been a role player the past two years. He only had 14 catches last year for 126 yards and 3 scores. Depth Chart.

Bills Sign Three: The Bills signed three lower level free agents to close out the week. They have signed WR Corey Washington, CB Leonard Johnson, and RB Joe Banyard. Johnson is probably the most likely to contribute to the team as he played in 10 games for Sean McDermott's defense in Carolina last year as a backup defensive back. He saw most of his playing time on special teams. He was an undrafted free agent in 2012 originally signed by Tampa Bay. He played four games in New England in 2015. For his career he has 189 tackles, 24 pass breakups and five interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns according to the team's website. Banyard adds depth to the halfback position and has spent time with the Jaguars the past two seasons. Washington brings tremendous size to the Bills receiving corps at 6'4". He spent three weeks on the team's practice squad last year. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014 by Arizona and has played in 14 games for the Giants where he had five career catches for 52 yards and a score. Front Office Page.

EJ To Raiders: The EJ Manuel era in Buffalo is now mercifully over. Adam Schefter has reported that he is signing with the Oakland Raiders. The offensive coordinator Todd Downing there used to be his QB coach with the Bills. There was no chance he was coming back to Buffalo.

Bills Match Offer Sheet: The Bills had until Monday to decide whether or not to match the offer sheet made by the Rams on Ryan Groy. They didn't need that long as today they announced that they did match the two year, $5 Million offer sheet that has $3.5M in guaranteed money. Groy was the first restricted free agent in the league to be given an offer sheet. He is a valuable reserve at guard and center for the Bills and with Eric Wood and Richie Incognito facing the end of their deals or a big cap hits next year they couldn't afford to lose Groy for not that much more then the tender. Free Agent Visit: Former Seahawks defensive back DeShawn Sead is having a free agent visit with the Bills. He started 15 games opposite Richard Sherman last year but suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in the playoffs so he may not be ready for the start of the season. He was not tendered as a restricted free agent although Seattle would like to bring him back at a cheaper rate. He is another versatile defensive back that Sean McDermott loves. He can play corner, nickel, and safety.

Holmes Saga: The NFLPA has a contract that says free agent WR Andre Holmes has signed with the Bills for three years, $4.5 Million with $2.425 Million guaranteed. Holmes and the Bills deny a deal has been struck. Mike Garofolo reports other teams are interested and now knows what the Bills are offering and may beat it. Another bizarre situation surrounding the Bills. If he does sign he will become the #2 receiver at this point. In other free agent news, Chris Gragg is visiting with the Jaguars. The Bills were reportedly interested RB Travaris Cadet but he has re-signed with the Saints.

Hunter To Pit: The Bills have lost another unrestricted free agent as Justin Hunter has become the first free agent signee of the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. He was a solid red zone threat for the Bills last year and brought much needed size to the receiving corps. In other free agent news involving Bills free agents, Zach Brown is scheduled to meet with the Raiders. He has been very quiet since the start of free agency but did tweet to Preston Brown at the beginning of free agency that he was not returning.

Smith Goes To Cincy: Another free agent visitor has signed elsewhere. The Bills brought in free agent right tackle Andre Smith for a visit and reportedly made a hard run at him. ESPN's Jeff Darlington reports that he was impressed but wanted to go back to Cincinnati where he started his career. He played for the Vikings last year. The Bills are reportedly looking at another running back. Former Saint Travaris Cadet is reportedly on their radar. The Saints and the Jets are also reportedly interested in the free agent. Cadet has just 26 career carries for 84 yards but has 102 career receptions for 802 yards and 7 TDs through the air. In other news, Percy Harvin has decided to retire. He was an unrestricted free agent who had two injury plagued seasons in Buffalo. Front Office Page.

Groy Gets Offer From Rams: Ryan Groy has been given a two year offer sheet from the Rams according to multiple reports. He would likely move into a starting role in Los Angeles and would re-join former Bills OL coach Aaron Kromer. The Bills would have five days to match. If they don't match it they would not receive any compensation since he got the low tender and was undrafted out of college. The Bills prepared for this by signing Vlad Ducasse to a free agent deal. They also have Patrick Lewis as a backup center. In other free agent news, DE Jayrone Elliott visited yesterday but will re-sign with the Packers. Front Office Page.

Bills Add Another WR: The Bills continue to add numbers to their wide receiver corps. They have signed free agent Jeremy Butler who was one of three players who came in for a visit today. His best season was in 2015 while with Baltimore when he had 31 catches for 363. He had only 2 catches for 11 yards last year with the Chargers before not being tendered a contract as an exclusive rights free agent. At 6'2" he adds size to the receiver corps. Depth Chart.

Bills Sign Another; Three More Visit: The Bills have signed free agent defensive end Ryan Davis. He spent his first four years with Jacksonville after signing as an undrafted free agent. He played for the Cowboys last year. He has 11 career sacks in 47 games including a career-high 6½ sacks back in 2014. The Bills also are hosting a trio of free agents as OT Andre Smith, WR Jeremy Buter, and DE Jayrone Elliott are in town. Smith was rumored to visit since Saturday. He is a veteran left tackle who was with the Vikings and is a former first round draft pick of the Bengals. Elliot wasn't tendered by the Packers as a restricted free agent and Butler was an exclusive rights free agent from the Chargers who wasn't tendered either. Butler played in 12 NFL games and has also been with the Jets and Ravens. Elliott is a strong side linebacker who has played in 38 games in his career. Front Office Page.
