Bills Wrap Up Offseason Workouts

Thursday June 15, 2017

Minicamp Wraps: The Bills wrapped minicamp today and were suppose to have it open to season ticket holders inside the stadium. The weather ruined that and they were forced to go inside to the fieldhouse where they had a DJ for the final practice of the offseason. Sean McDermott addressed the media prior to practice and said they expect to have everyone healthy in time for training camp including Cordy Glenn and Shareece White who is day to day with a calf injury. Sammy Watkins has built a good foundation for training camp and they will continue to monitor him. McDermott admitted he is worried about how the players will handle over a month off. The coach raved about Jordan Mills who has had "one heck of an offseason." He also said Tre'Davious White is playing like a 2nd or 3rd year player.

Camp Schedule Released: The Bills released their training camp schedule and it has much less time at St. Johns Fisher College than in year's past. It is also highlighted by a night practice at New Era Field on August 4th at 5:30pm. The first practice is on July 27th at 5:30pm and the last one is on August 15th at 8:45am. There are only 13 practices in Rochester and none of them are at night like years past.

Minicamp Underway: The Bills began their three day mandatory minicamp today. The only three players not on the field were LeSean McCoy, Kyle Williams, and Cordy Glenn. McCoy was out with a stomach virus and Williams had a stiff neck. Glenn was seen on the sidelines with a walking boot on and remains week to week with his ankle injury. Sammy Watkins remains limited as he comes back from his second foot surgery. Blake Annen wasn't there as well as he was released this morning leaving an open roster spot. Seantrel Henderson was back after sitting out last week with a cyst.

McDermott Presser: Before the Bills took the field Sean McDermott adressed the media. He would not speak to speculation about adding Eric Decker or Gary Barnidge who visited last month just saying they will always look to upgrade their roster. He praised the leadership Tyrod Taylor has shown this offseason and praised the consistency of Andre Holmes. He re-iterated that they could kick outside either Preston Brown or Reggie Ragland if that makes them a better team. He also said Jonathan Williams has taken advantage of the opportunity to be the number two back. He also had nice things to say about Kevon Seymour who he said will see plenty of time at the nickel spot which he considers a starting position. Depth Chart.

Bills Lose Out On Maclin: Jeremy Maclin has made his decision and he has chosen to the Baltimore Ravens as he has agreed to a two year deal with the team. Mike Garofolo reports that several Bills players were confident they would get him as late as today while the Ravens were reportedly confident since Friday. Ian Rapoport reports that the fact that Maclin's wife is from the Baltimore area was a big consideration. Josina Anderson reports that it actually came down to the Ravens and Eagles and the Bills weren't in the picture. Sal Capaccio reports that the Bills made one final offer this afternoon shortly before the announcement came down. Many wonder now if the Bills turn their attention to Eric Decker. It is likely that the Bills weren't going to pay big time money for Maclin as they are planning more for the long term rather than the short term.

Powell Suspended: Walter Powell has been suspended by the league for four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances. The suspension will not help him as he is a borderline player who's roster spot is not secure and Sean McDermott does not have much patience for character issues. Powell released the following statement on twitter, "I was disappointed to recently find out that I had mistakenly used a product that caused a positive result during testing. Although I'm frustrated with the result, I've accepted the league's discipline of a four game suspension. I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the entire Bills organization and the Bills fans for my mistake. I will continue to give the Bills my best effort every day, and help contribute to a successful 2017 season."

McDermott Speaks: Sean McDermott spoke to the media today as the Bills finish up their organized team activities today inside New Era Field. On the injury front, McDermott said Sammy Watkins has been back on the field since Tuesday in individual drills while Reggie Ragland and Zay Jones are full go. Seantrel Henderson is sidelined with a cyst in a sensitive area on the backside while Cordy Glenn is still week to week. On the linebacker situation the coach said he doesn't see Ragland or Preston Brown lining up much on the outside at this time. Gerald Hodges is also working in the middle but will is getting some work on the outside. He praised Shareece Wright for his work ethic saying it speeaks volumes about him that he would take an uber from Chicago to get to Buffalo in time for OTAs this week. Depth Chart.

Maclin In Baltimore: Sean McDermott briefly addressed Jeremy Maclin's visit saying he's a good man and it was a good visit but he wouldn't get into it after that except saying people can overreact to free agent signings. The coach did say he had some conversations with Andy Reid about Macling. The coach also acknowledged how times have changed in free agent recuritment pointing to LeSean McCoy and his recruitment and instagram stories. He did say he likes the recruitment by McCoy and Tyrod Taylor as he wants his players to know they have a voice but adding they have to do what is in the best interest of the team. Mike Garofolo reports the Bills are not out of the running for Maclin yet as he is hearing he enjoyed his visit. The Ravens are getting their crack right now. The Eagles are saying they are not interested so it may come down to the Bills, Ravens, and maybe the Browns for his services.

Maclin Visit Day Two Ends: The Jeremy Maclin visit extended to day two today but he is now headed to Baltimore for his scheduled visit according to Adam Schefter. Staying for day two was not unexpected since he arrived late yesterday which normally would make the trip extend into today. Mike Garofolo of NFL Network reports that it is possible that salary concerns may be why a deal hasn't gotten done. LeSean McCoy is really grasping the recruiting role as he sent a couple of instagram stories with him, Tyrod Taylor, and Maclin in it. He was bragging about Maclin getting 90 catches and 1,300 yards with the Bills. Stay tuned to see if he signs or leaves for Baltimore.

Bills Announce Coaching Interns: The Bills announced the hiring of four coaches as interns under the Bill Wash Minority Fellowship program. Kade Rannings, Phoebe Schecter, Lonnie Teasley and Byron Thomas are the new interns. Schecter is the 2nd female hired by the Bills as she met Kim Pegula at a Women's career in Football forum.

Maclin in Town: Adam Schefter confirmed the report from Paul Peck last night that Jeremy Maclin is visiting with the Bills today. He also likely will head to Baltimore for a visit tomorrow. Philadelphia and Cleveland are also reportedly interested in him. It may come down to if the Bills are willing to give him what he wants or are looking for a bargain. Chances are he will leave without a contract but stay in touch with the Bills until a final decision is made.

WR Move: The Bills made a move at wide receiver this morning but it has nothing to do with the impending Jeremy Maclin visit. The team has signed WR Rashad Ross and released former 6th round draft pick Kolby Listenbee who was never healthy as a member of the Bills. Ross is a speedster who has return experience. He broke into the league in 2014 with the Bears and spent the last two years in Washington. In 52 career games he has 127 receptions for 1,755 yards and has a 101 yard kickoff return to his credit. Maclin Meeting Reported: Former WIVB sportscaster Paul Peck is reporting on his podcast that the Jeremy Maclin is on his way to Buffalo and will meet with the team on Tuesday. Mike Garofolo of NFL Network said earlier that Buffalo will be a tempting landing spot for Maclin because he would be in line for a lot of playing time and he has many connections with the Bills.
