Bills Set Roster For Season

Bills Add Watkins Brother To Practice Squad: The Bills added five players to the eight man practice squad. Four of the players were with the team this summer as Dezmin Lewis, Cyril Richardson, Kevin Reddick, Cierre Wood, and Jonathan Meeks were added to the squad along with the brother of Sammy Watkins as CB Jaylen Watkins was added to the squad leaving two open spots. They also filled one of their two open spots on the 53 man roster as they signed C Gabe Ikard off waivers from the Tennessee Titans. He was an undrafted free agent last year but missed the entire season with a injury. Front Office Page.

Bills Cut Cassel, 4 Others: The Bills needed to get their roster to 54 men, including the suspended Marcell Dareus, by 4pm today. They went two better by getting the roster down to 51 by releasing five players including Matt Cassel. The others released were DT Red Bryant, C Dalton Freeman, S Jonathan Meeks, and LB Kevin Reddick. The move leaves 7 WRs and 5 TEs on the current roster but only 7 OL. It also leaves five of the six draft picks on the final roster. The seven receivers include keeping two special teams specialists Marcus Thigpen and Marcus Easley. Thigpen is an explosive punt returner which is needed with Leodis McKelvin sidelined. Depth Chart.

Cuts Begin: The Bills have until 4pm tomorrow to get their roster down to 53 men. The team has announced 17 cuts and placed Leodis McKelvin on the Reserve/Non Football Injury List. Meaning he can begin practicing after week 6 on Oct. 19th. Deonte Thompson has been designated waived/injured. Cyril Richardson, Dez Lewis, Matt Simms, and IK Enemkpali were the big names among those released. That leaves them with three moves left since they only need to get to 54 with the one game suspension of Marcel Dareus. They still have five tight ends and seven wide receivers on the roster. Bills Lose To Lions 17-10: Ron Brooks returned an interception 81 yards for the Bills only touchdown in a 17-10 loss to the Lions as the Bills finished the preseason 2-2. Merril Noel hit the receiver as the ball got there and it deflected off his helmet into Brooks' hands who had a clear lane to the end zone. Dan Carpenter hit a 43 yard field goal for the Bills only other points. Matt Simms went 22 of 38 for 223 yards. Lions QB Kellen Moore threw a 64 yard touchdown pass to T.J. Jones in the second quarter. Zach Zenner scored on a 3 yard run in the fourth quarter for the winning points.

Who Helped Themselves: Bryce Brown showed that he will likely be able to handle a backup running back role with the team. He played into the second half and ran nine times for 37 yards. In what may be too little too late seventh round pick Dezmin Lewis made some nice catches on his way to a six catch 81 yard performance including a nice 28 yard grab. Ron Brooks made a few nice plays including the pick six. A.J. Tarpley looked really good leading the way with eight solo tackles.

Who Hurt Themselves: The backup offensive line struggled again especially Cyril Richardson and Cyrus Kouandjio. Matt Simms had decent stats but also had one awful fumble and didn't do anything to force the team to make him their third quarterback. He also had a fumble where he literally threw the ball backwards to avoid a sack that was the worst fumble I have seen since the Mark Sanchez's butt fumble. Dan Carpenter continued in Rex Ryan's doghouse after missing a 40 yard field goal off the upright. After the game the coach said they will be looking since he's tired of seeing missed field goals adding nobody wins the job by default. Kraig Urbik had two bobbled snaps.

Bills Set For Preseason Finale: The Bills are in Detroit to take on the Lions in their annual preseason finale with the team. Matt Simms is expected to go all the way at quarterback with a chance to steal the number three QB job. That is because reports are circulating that the team may be considering parting ways with Matt Cassel. No decision has been made yet according to the reports but some people think they can use the money elsewhere. Cassel reportedly is unhappy with the amount of playing time he got in preseason to win the starting job. All the skill position starters are not expected to play at all in this game.

Bills Claim Two: The Bills claimed two players off of waivers yesterday and added to their growing roster of ex-Jets in the process. They were awarded ex-Jet C Dalton Freeman and LB Kevin Reddick who was released by the Panthers. To make room they released LB Jimmy Gaines and placed T Tyson Chandler on the waived-injured list. Gaines was a local boy who didn't have a real chance at making the team. Chandler struggled in camp before getting hurt. Freeman played every game for Rex Ryan's squad last year including one start. He came into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Reddick spent time with the Saints, Panthers and Chargers and has 21 career games played. Front Office Page.

Henderson at Right Tackle: Coach Rex Ryan confirmed that Seantrel Henderson will be the starter at right offensive tackle to start the regular season. Henderson is a 7th round draft pick from 2014 whose play has seemingly improved with his tenure in the NFL. Henderson battled 2014 second round draft pick Cyrus Kouandjio for the job and saw most of the starting action this preseason.

Fred Jackson to Seattle?: Various media reports have Fred Jackson visiting with the Seattle Seahawks today as he looks to catch on with a new team for the 2015 season. Seattle appears to be an ideal landing spot for the running back as it would reunite him with his old friend Marshawn Lynch and give him a spot on a team considered to be a Super Bowl contender.

Bills Down to 75:The Bills have trimmed the roster down to 75 players by announcing two more roster moves this afternoon. WR Austin Willis was designated as waived/injured and CB Cam Thomas going on the Reserved/PUP list.

Taylor to Start: Secrets in the NFL usually aren't secrets for very long, and the mystery surrounding the Bills starting quarterback is no exception. Despite coach Rex Ryan saying a decision on the starting quarterback would be made on Sunday but not made public, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports tweeted that Tyrod Taylor will start the regular season at quarterback. Despite a slow start by all three quarterbacks in camp, the quarterback race culminated on Saturday in the game against Pittsburgh and all three quarterbacks played exceptionally well. Taylor seemingly became a fan favorite with his strong arm, quick decision-making and the ability to make exiting plays with his feet. There was speculation that the offense was designed to have a safe game manager at the helm which played into Matt Cassel's hands, but Taylor seemingly has a higher potential ceiling and will keep play exciting. At this point it is unknown whether Taylor's starting position means the end of Cassel or E.J. Mannuel as a Buffalo Bill although Rex Ryan says the Bills will carry 3 quarterbacks on the roster.

Bills Make Cuts Including Jackson: The Bills cut 12 players on their way to get down to a roster of 75 players tomorrow and made a surprising cut. Fan favorite Fred Jackson was released after joining the team in 2006 as an undrafted free agent from small Coe College. In his career with the Bills Jackson ran for 5646 yards and 30 touchdowns and his underdog status made him a great fit for the Bills. The move allows the 34-year-old Jackson some time to try and catch on with another team - his run of 41 yards in Saturday's game in Pittsburgh show that he may have something to offer teams in eed of running back help. Also cut were CB Ross Cockrell, DE Michael Buchanan, DT Justin Hamilton, LB Andrew Hudson, T Tarren Jones, CB Ellis Lankster, S Kenny Ladler, S Wes Miller, G DJ Morrell, DE Cedric Reed and RB Ricky Seale. Cockrell was a 4th round draft pick last season but did not develop as expected. The Bills still need to release 2 more players to get the required 75.
