Routt Visits; Johnson Talks Ongoing

Report Bills, Johnson Far Apart: The Associated Press is reporting that sources tell them that the Bills and Stevie Johnson remain far apart on contract negotiations. The two sides are still expected to continue talks at the scouting combine this week. The report also says that the Bills are not expected to use the franchise tag on their top receiver.

Defensive Changes Hurts Some Players: The change to the 4-3 defensive will help some players but hurt others. Dave Wannstedt said in yesterday's press conference that the team wants defensive linemen that can rush the passer and lighter, faster linebackers. He said he doesn't want one dimensional type players that can play the run but not get pressure on the quarterback. This does not bode well for Alex Carrington and Dwan Edwards. Edwards is a prototypical 3-4 defensive end and doesn't have the pass rushing ability to be a 4-3 end. Carrington went back and forth between end and linebacker in the 3-4 but doesn't seem to fit the new scheme as well.

Wannstedt Talks Defense: Defensive Coordinator Dave Wannstedt met with the media today to discuss the defense. He said the 4-3 defense will take advantage of the strengths of defensive tackles Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams. He did say you will see odd and even fronts and that Williams is on track for a complete recovery from his foot injury. The coordinator praised the play of Nick Barnett and said he will be a three down backer playing outside in the normal defense and inside in the nickel. Wannstedt felt rookie Kelvin Sheppard really came on last year and he's very confident in him manning the middle linebacker spot.

Johnson Talks Heating Up: The Buffalo News is reporting that contract talks are heating up between the Bills and Stevie Johnson. The Bills reportedly sent a contract proposal last week and the agent for Johnson countered it on Monday. The two sides are expected to talk next week at the combine.

Lynch Pick Higher: The Bills will get a pick one round higher than previously thought to complete the Marshawn Lynch trade. That deal gave them a 4th round pick in last year's draft and a conditional sixth rounder this year. Since Lynch had substantial playing time in Seattle that pick is now a 5th round pick and will be the 11th or 12th pick in that round. The team already has two fourth round picks thanks to the Lee Evans deal. At this point they have nine picks in the seven rounds but are awaiting any compensatory picks they may receive.

Routt Has Good Visit: Free agent cornerback Stanford Routt had a good visit with the Bills yesterday. He briefly spoke to the media at the end of the visit and said it was a good day. He wants to go to a team that he can help win and feels the sky is the limit for Buffalo. This was the first of many visits for the sought after player. He is the first marquee free agent after being released a month before free agency begins. He is in Kansas City today and is expected to visit Tennessee, Houston, and Dallas among others. He is a Texas native that may give one of these teams an edge over Buffalo because of their close proximity to his home.

Routt Visiting: The Bills entertained free agent cornerback Stanford Routt this afternoon. He was released by the Raiders last week and has six interceptions in the past two years. He also broke up 28 passes the past two years in Oakland. He was released, in part, because the team did not want to pay him a $5 Million bonus due last week. Routt had signed a huge contract before last season and spent 7 years in Oakland. The Bills are reportedly one of several teams interested in him but Buffalo is suppose to be his first visit.
