Bills Hold Rookie Minicamp

Tasker On The Wall: Steve Tasker has been named as this year's former Bill to be heading to the Wall Of Fame. He will be the 24th name on the Wall and is the premier special teams player of all time. He was a unanimous selection and said the first thing he thought of was all the names up there already. The game picked for the ceremony has yet to be decided.

Saturday May 12, 2007

Day One Notes: The official Bills website reports that today's morning workout began with some special teams work since any rookie will have to play on some of the special teams unit. Paul Posluszny worked at middle linebacker as expected but Dick Jauron hasn't committed to leaving him there. Marshawn Lynch loked good catching passes out of the backfield according to the team's website. Trent Edwards showed accuracy and a good touch and good zip on his passes.

Two Injured: Two rookies suffered hamstring injuries in today's first day of workouts according to the Bills official website. Undrafted free agent signee CB Reggie Lewis, and tryout WR Joe Konrad pulled the muscle in the morning session and did not finish.

15 Unsigned Tryout: The 15 players that the Bills invited to this weekend's rookie camp that aren't signed are: QB Perry Patterson from Syracuse, WR Joe Konrad from John Carroll, TE Tommy Christy from Ohio, C Kyle Young from Fresno State, DE Jeremy Pittman from Central Arkansas, DTs Chris Hudler and Kenyon Scott from Texas Tech, OLBs Larry Edwards from North Carolina, John Mohring from Georgia Southern, and Mario Reese from Minnesota, CB Greg Lovely from SW Missouri, S J.D. Nelson from Oregon and Jon Carto from Sacred Heart, K REagan Schyneider from Texas El-Paso, and snapper Aaron King from Texas El-Paso.

Swanson Added: The Bills made a roster move as the rookie minicamp got underway today. They have signed CB Riley Swanson and released DT LaRon Harris after he failed his physical. Swanson had 179 career tackles and 7 career interceptions at Wake Forest.

Minicamp Underway: The Bills rookie minicamp gets underway today and runs through Monday. It is mandatory for all first year players including draft picks, undrafted free agent signings, last year's six practice squad playes, and about 15 players that are unsigned that the Bills have invited to camp. There are two 90 minute sessions today and Monday and one 90 minute session tomorrow. They will focus on fundamentals and individual drills. All sessions are closed to the public. There is a mandatory camp for all players in June.

Walker Won't Report: DT Darwin Walker won't report to the Bills unless he gets a new contract. He told the media on Thursday while he was speaking at a commencement ceremony for the University of Tennessee's College of Engineering. He was in contract negotiations to re-do his deal with the Eagles before he was acquired in the Takeo Spikes deal. His agent said the Bills were aware when the trade was made that a new deal was going to be required. A Bills spokesman said that they are in contact with his agent and look forward to Walker reporting for the mandatory minicamp in June. He has not been in Buffalo since the trade and is not taking part in the offseason conditioning program.

Bills Waive Wright: A week after signing Manny Wright off of waivers from the Dolphins, the Bills have released the defensive tackle. The team said he didn't fit into the team's plans after getting a good look at him. Wright said he has 30 pounds to lose as it appears he wasn't in football shape.

Crowell Takes On Leadership Role: With the defensive losses of Takeo Spikes, Nate Clements, and London Fletcher the Bills defense has quickly become much younger and are void of leadership. Angelo Crowell says he's ready to fill that role. Appearing on Sirius NFL radio this past week, Crowell said he will be looked on to be a leader and he's ready to take it on. He said he'll play wherever they want him to but he is more comfortable on the outside and it appears like he will stay there.

Bills Sign Scobey: The Bills added another running back today when they signed unrestricted free agent Josh Scobey. He was in for a visit two weeks ago. He is a four year veteran who has played in Arizona and last year in Seattle. His main job in the pros has always been as a special teams standout. He only has 27 career carries and 19 career receptions. He has a 22.4 yard career average as a kick returner.

Bills Officially Sign 15: The Bills finally made it official by announcing the signing of 15 undrafted free agents. 12 of the players were previously reported over the last few days here and our front office page. The three other players were C Christian Gaddis, G Zach Tubbs, and DT LaRon Harris. Gaddis was a three year starter at Villanova. Harris left Tennessee for Northwestern Oklahoma St. after having academic problems. Tubbs played right tackle for Arkansas but projects as a guard in the pros. Depth Chart

Wright Signing Cofirmed: The Bills confirmed the signing of former Dolphin Manny Wright off of waivers. He is considered a run stuffing nose tackle who has only played three games in his career. He missed last season with depression as we reported yesterday.

One More Signed: We are still waiting for the Bills to officially announce their undrafted free agent signings but we have one more player reportedly signed by the Bills. KFFL reports that Ohio WR Scott Mayle is now with the team. He's a tall, but lanky wideout at 6'1" and 173 pounds. He did run a 4.4 40. Unofficial Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Bills Add DT? A report from the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel says the Bills have claimed DT Manny Wright off of waivers. Miami released the troubled player yesterday. He was a 2005 supplemental 5th round draft choice but missed last season after battling depression issues and showed up at the offseason program overweight.

One More Signed: A report out of California says that Trent Edwards will have company in Buffalo. A Stanford teammate has reportedly signed a free agent contract with the Bills. S Trevor Hooper has 91 tackles for the Cardinals with 2½ sacks and an interception last year. He started all 12 games last year and was an All-Pac 10 honorable mention. Unofficial Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Bills Fill Some Holes: The Bills filled two immediate needs in the first two rounds of the draft, they got their running back and linebacker. Those two moves make this draft successful on their own. The team filled other depth needs as well but their are holes that weren't filled specifically at cornerback and wide receiver. Complete Review.

Modrak Stays: The Bills announced today that they have reached an agreement to keep the head of college scouting Tom Modrak. It has been rumored for months that Modrak would be leaving. His contract expired after the draft and Marv Levy said he would sit down with Modrak and would look to keep him since he has done a great job. His duties will remain the same:

Minicamp Dates Set: The Bills announced the dates of their minicamps. The first camp will be mainly for rookies and take place Sat. May 12th through Mon. May 14th. The 2nd minicamp is for everyone and will take place June 11th through 13th.

Add Three More To List: The unofficial list of undrafted free agents is now up to 10 as WGR is reporting three more names that we didn't have. LB Thaddaeus Washington, OT Corey Davis, and WR Aaron Brown. Washington is a Colorado product and he fits the Bills run to the ball mentality but doesn't have ideal speed. Davis is a powerful blocker from James Madison that isn't very flexible. Brown could be a find as he has ideal size for a receiver at 6'3". He caught 39 passes last year and 129 in his career at New Hampshire. Unofficial Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Bills Add Two: The unofficial list of undrafted free agents continue to trickle in based on reports from around the country. The team should announce its full list as early as today. Two more names making the rounds are DL Corey Mace and WR Johnny Quinn. The Bills think Quinn can help on special teams as he has returned kicks and punts in college as well as acted as a holder and played the coverage teams at times as well. Monday April 30, 2007

Posluszny Introduced: Paul Posluszny said in his introduction press conference that he is very excited about the opportunity he has with the Bills but knows nothing will be handed to him. He knows he had to work hard in practice.

Lynch Introduced: Marshawn Lynch wanted to thank the Bills for the opportunity and feels he got lucky getting picked by the Bills in his introduction press conference. He appreciates the opportunity and being told by the owner that he's being brought in as the starter is a big accomplishment and he will work hard for it, knowing nothing will be handed to him.

Wilson Expects Top Two To Start: Ralph Wilson said in today's press conference that he expects both of the top two picks to come in and start. He said he talked to Marshawn Lynch and feels if he can play as good as his personality is, the team will have an outstanding running back. He feels the team was lucky in being able to get Lynch and Paul Posluszny.

Lynch, Posluszny Choose Numbers: Marshawn Lynch will wear number 23 with the Bills and Paul Posluszny will wear 51. That was announced as both players were introduced to the media today. Lynch wore 24 in college but that number wasn't available so he chose 23 over 29. Posluszny could have followed the path he did in college, taking Shane Conlan's number but he decided to go his own way with 51. He said don't read anything into it, he just liked that number best and while he respects Conlan and called it an honor to be compared to him, he decided he wants to do his own thing.

Report Says Five Signed: Now that the draft is over teams are working really hard to sign the top players not picked. WGR is reporting that the Bills have reached an agreement with five players so far, including two from the University of Florida. Those two were at positions of need, WR Jermalle Cornelius and CB Reggie Lewis. Various media reports also say that the Bills have signed Clemson CB Duane Coleman. Texas Southern S Stacey Thomas was reportedly added along with LSU K/P Chris Jackson. Coleman has a good burst and can change directions well but is undersized and can get pushed around. He was a solid special teams player. Lewis has strong body control but lacks ideal height at 5'10". Cornelius is on the smaller side to just a shade under 5'11". He has averaged speed and isn't a great route runner but can create separation in man to man coverage. Thomas had 114 tackles and five interceptions last year. Unofficial Undrafted Free Agent Signings

Modrak's Future: Asst. GM Tom Modrak's contract expires now that the draft is over and their has been speculation that he will leave. Marv Levy said he will discuss his future with him as early as today and said he's done a great job and they want to keep him and hope it works out favorably.

Jauron Feels They Can Win For A While: Dick Jauron said if they are right with their picks they are building to be a successful winning programs for more than just a couple of years. On the pick of Paul Posluszny, Jauron confirmed they would like him to play in the middle so Angelo Crowell can stay on the outside where he performed well last year. In order to help J.P. Losman succeed they need to help him out and they think they did with the two running backs. On the pick of Trent Edwards, they had to take him because he was rated very highly at a position they needed depth in. On the CB spot, he says its wide open to competition and they would like to see Ashton Youboty do well but he wouldn't count out Kiwaukee Thomas in winning the starting job. On John Wendling they think he deserves a long look because he played well enough in college for that. He can play either free or strong safety but they have him slotted at strong safety at this point.

Opportunity For CB Not There: Marv Levy spoke in his post draft news conference and admitted the team still has needs to fill including CB and they will still look to fill it with undrafted free agents. It does create an opportunity for Ashton Youboty he said. They like the players they picked and he thinks they will help him get better but he is never satisfied as to where they are. On the QB situation, they thought they would take one late in the draft but they never thought Trent Edwards would be there at the end of the third round. They had to take him because his grade was so much higher then everyone elses at that point. Levy said they never got involved in Randy Moss talks and the Michael Turner talks were dead a while ago. Many people in the war room really liked Dwayne Wright, they planned on taking him if they hadn't picked Lynch so they took him anyway, it was a tough decision since they already had their running back.

Bills Have Above Average Draft: It was a successful draft since the team filled two starting positions in the first two rounds but it came at a steep price as they lost the first of two third round picks. They also filled the depth at many positions however some positions like corner were left unattended. Check out our grade and player capsules on our Draft Page.
