Week 9: Offense Shut Down By High Flying Jets 27-11
Offense has no answers as Jets moved the ball well.
by Steve Saslow

Here are our position by position grades:

Quarterback:

Ryan Fitzpatrick struggled against the Jets defensive scheme. He missed an open Roosevelt wide on a third down pass in the second quarter and then threw two late interceptions before halftime. He finished 15 of 31 for 191 yards and one touchdown but most of those yards were in garbage time.
Grade F: Worst effort of the season.

Running Backs:

Fred Jackson struggled more than usual but still ended putting up big numbers. He fumbled the ball away and couldn't pull in two passes. He finished with 82 yards on just 18 carries and had three catches for 38 more yards.
C.J. Spiller got some time when Jackson was banged up and had two carries for five yards.
Grade B: Not a top game for Jackson but he will still the best offensive player on the field.

Receivers:

Stevie Johnson had a big battle with Darrelle Revis who had him blanketed most of the day. Johnson still managed to make a few plays including a career long 52 yard reception and finished with 84 yards on three catches.
David Nelson definitely benefited from Jones returning. He is much better in the slot. Had a big 15 yard catch on 3rd and 12 late in the first quarter. He then had a fourth quarter touchdown and finished with four catches for 36 yards.
Donald Jones had four passes thrown his way but caught only one pass for six yards.
Naaman Roosevelt had one catch for three yards.
Scott Chandler had three catches for 24 yards.
Grade D: Couldn't get open to make plays.

Offensive Line:

Andy Levitre made a nice block on a 26 yard screen pass to Jackson. He was called for a holding penalty when he pulled down Maybin.
Erik Pears was called for a false start penalty.
Grade B+: Gave up no sacks and Fitz had time to throw. Opened up some holes for the running game but not enough.

Defensive Line:

Marcell Dareus recovered a botched snap and had a nice stop for loss on third and short forcing the Jets to punt on their opening possession of the second half. He finished with five tackles on the day.
Dwan Edwards deflected a third down pass that was ruled an interception by Wilson. It was overturned by replay. He had five tackles.
Alex Carrington had a sack and knocked down a pass. Two tackles for loss as he's really coming on in his second season.
Torell Troup is not coming on in his second season, he had one tackle.
Grade C: Got pushed back off the line too much.

Linebackers:

Nick Barnett was called for a offsides penalty even though he was clearly drawn offsides. He did have a big stop for a loss in the 2nd quarter. He led the way with nine tackles.
Kelvin Sheppard was beaten for a 24 yard pass to Dustin Keller on the Jets first series. He had seven tackles.
Spencer Johnson had five tackles.
Arthur Moats was in on three tackles and had a quarterback hit.
Danny Batten was busy as he was in on five tackles.
Grade B: Didn't have a bad game.

Secondary:

Terrence McGee drew a pass interference penalty against Holmes when he pushed off of him. He then committed a pass interference in the end zone that setup a Jets touchdown. He had eight tackles and was beaten in the passing game more than usual.
Drayton Florence had six tackles on the game.
Leodis McKelvin was called for pass interference and a bomb as he struggled against Holmes most of the day. He was victimized by a blatant offensive pass interference push off but it wasn't called.
Jairus Byrd had a nice interception in the back of the end zone when Sanchez threw the ball right to him. He had six tackles.
George Wilson had an apparent diving interception late in the first half but replay overturned it and the Jets kicked a field goal. He had five tackles.
Bryan Scott had good coverage on a third down pass to hold the Jets to a field goal in the third quarter. Had four tackles.
Grade C: Didn't do a great job in pass coverage.

Special Teams:

Brian Moorman had a great 66 yard punt and his first kick. He added kickoff duties after Lindell was hurt and kicked it to the end zone on his first kick. He also did a nice job on an onside kick as the Jets fumbled it but recovered. Punting he averaged 47.5 yards on four punts including two inside the 20.
Rian Lindell made a touchdown saving shoestring tackle on the second half kickoff. He hurt his arm on the play but saved the Bills seven points. He hit a 24 yard field goal but didn't kickoff
Brad Smith returned four punts for 76 yards.
Coverage Units allowed a 59 yard return of the second half kickoff and another 24 yard return. There were two punt returns including a 15 yarder.
Grade D: This unit didn't help the cause.

Coaching:

Chan Gailey takes a hit as the team had their first clunker of the year. He had no answers for Rex Ryan's defensive scheme. Didn't make the right halftime adjustments. Bad call to challenge a spot in the fourth quarter. Worse call was not sneaking it on 4th and inches.
George Edwards had some answers to what the Jets were doing but did allow 348 yards to a poor offensive football team.
Bruce DeHaven saw a letdown from his unit as well.
Grade F: Unusual poor coaching from the staff.
