Week 4: Team Failed Miserably In Rout
Total epic failure for the Bills.
by Steve Saslow

Here are our position by position grades:

Quarterback:

Ryan Fitzpatrick was under siege all day long and was inaccurate with his throws. He finished with 128 yards passing on 12 of 27. Most of those yards were in garbage time as were many of his 74 yards rushing on 7 carries. He led the team.
Grade D: Did more with his feet than he did with his arm.

Running Backs:

Marshawn Lynch fumbled the ball away on one of his four carries. He gained eight yards.
C.J. Spiller was a non factor in the offense he touched the ball three times. Two carries for 11 yards and one catch for four yards.
Fred Jackson is the forgotten man but he led the backs with 21 yards rushing on three carries including a fourth down conversion out of the wildcat.
Grade F: Not involved at all.

Receivers:

Lee Evans dropped two passes and caught one in the final seconds. His only catch for six yards.
Roscoe Parrish only caught one pass for seven yards.
Steve Johnson caught three passes for 31 yards including a 13 yard touchdown. He did drop a pass.
David Nelson was the lone catalyst on offense. He had four catches for 75 yards and single handedly setup the Bills first score.
Jonathan Stupar was used as a blocker. Not thrown a pass.
David Martin got wide open and held on to a touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick. His first as a Bills.
Grade D: Starters did nothing; backups at least did something.

Offensive Line:

Cornell Green just plain stinks. He was constantly beaten or blocking the wrong man. He killed the Bills opening possession of the second half by missing his man and causing a sack on Fitzpatrick by Shaun Ellis that killed the drive.
Grade F: No yards to be had on the ground. No time to throw. Had no answers for Jets blitzes.

Defensive Line:

Kyle Williams had five tackles.
Dwan Edwards had a nice tackle to hold Tomlinson to three yards. I mention it because they rarely slowed L.T. all game long. He was in on 11 tackles.
Spencer Johnson knocked down a pass on the Jets third drive was in on eight tackles in his first start of the season.
Alex Carrington got some playing time but didn't do much.
Torell Troup had one tackle.
Grade F: Had gaping holes for the running game.

Linebackers:

Chris Kelsay had five tackles but couldn't cover anyone.
Paul Posluszny was in on 12 tackles but too many were down the field.
Akin Ayodele was busy as he was in on 10 tackles.
Aaron Maybin was seen for one play on defense the whole game according to most accounts.
Reggie Torbor had five solo tackles and had two passes defensed.
Arthur Moats played some to rush the passer but didn't get near the Jets QBs.
Grade F: The front seven was just awful.

Secondary:

Drayton Florence was beaten by Tomlinson for a 10 yard pass to convert a third and two.
Leodis McKelvin was beaten badly deep by Braylon Edwards for the Jets second touchdown. He was beaten by Keller for their second touchdown on a pass from Brady Smith out of the wildcat. He had some success early though, he had a hard hit on Edwards forcing him to drop a third down pass. Had perfect coverage on bomb to Edwards on the next series. Was beaten for three yards on a third and two pass to Crotchery. He had six tackles.
Jairus Byrd couldn't come up with a fumble and was in on seven tackles.
Donte Whitner was beaten by Crotchery on a third and three play for 14 yard gain. He whiffed on a 26 yard touchdown run by Tomlinson.
Bryan Scott had two tackles.
Reggie Corner broke up a pass.
Grade C: Did a decent job considering they had to hold their coverages a long time because of the lack of a pass rush.

Special Teams:

Brian Moorman averaged 43.9 yards on nine punts but only one ended up inside the 20. His net was just 34.7 yards.
Rian Lindell hit both extra points and had no field goal attempts.
Roscoe Parrish had 50 yards on four punt returns including a nifty 26 yarder.
C.J. Spiller had a 50 yard kickoff return negated on a holding penalty by Donald Jones. Finished with a 22 yard average on five returns.
Chris Ellis made a bad play trying to return a short kickoff and he fumbled it.
Coverage Units did a nice job especially Corey McIntyre who had one huge hit and two special teams tackles. They allowed 11.9 yards per punt return and 28 yards on kick returns.
Grade C: Not the reason for the loss.

Coaching:

Chan Gailey didn't have answers for the Jets. Only gave the ball to his talented trio of running backs nine times.
George Edwards couldn't figure out a way to stop the Jets rushing attack or even slow it down.
Bruce DeHaven had his special teams playing decent ball.
Grade F: It's back to the drawing board.
