Two More Picks Sign

The Bills signed two more picks this week, leaving just the top two picks unsigned. That news and the latest on Marcellus Wiley highlights the Week In Review complete with our take on the issues:

The Bills reached agreement with third round pick Corey Moore and seventh round pick Drew Haddad. The contracts leave the top two picks unsigned. Our Take: The club is two steps closer to getting everyone under contract before Thursday's opening of camp. It will probably come down to the wire but expect Travares Tillman and Erik Flowers to sign in time to participate in the first practice.

According to our projections the Bills are approximately $550,000 under the cap with the two top picks left to sign. Last year's first round pick Antoine Winfield counted almost $1 Million against the cap last year so the club may have to free up some more space. Our Take: Expect the Bills to sign Tillman first and then see what they have left over for Flowers. They may actually go over the cap and hope that a cheaper rookie beats a high priced veteran out for a job, so the club can get under the cap by opening day.

Marcellus Wiley has begun his recovery from the back surgery he had last Saturday. He was up and walking the same day and he now walks without the help of a cane as he met the press Friday in the new administration building on Friday. He is targeting a return for the final preseason game against Philadelphia on Aug. 24th. Our Take: The timing could have been a lot worse. Wiley could have used a full training camp to get use to being on the right side of the line again but he should be fine, if he can return healthy at least a week or so before the season starts. This adds to the importance of getting Erik Flowers in to camp on time since he will gain valuable experience while Wiley recovers.

The agent for star WR Eric Moulds spoke out this week and said that the club has started very preliminary talks with the soon to be free agent. The club is not in the same ballpark with Moulds as yet. He will definitely be looking for similar dollars to the contracts signed by fellow class of '96 first rounders Keyshawn Johnson and Marvin Harrison. Our Take: If the Bills ever plan to use their franchise tag, next year should be the year, to keep Moulds around. His agent said Moulds wants to stay, so if a longterm deal can't be worked out they need to slap the tag on him.

Fifth round pick Sammy Morris is working hard at a sports therapy and fitness center to overcome his recurring shoulder problem. Morris wants to eliminate the nagging injuries he had in his college career. Our Take: The good news is, he is trying to do something about it, the bad news is, if it doesn't work he can become an injury plagued pick that won't help the team much.

Bruce Smith continues to talk, he stated to a Washington DC area paper that he is happy to be with a team that has a chance to win, and is happy to be out of Buffalo where the team is on a downward spiral. Our Take: Same old Bruce, new place.

Former QB Bill Munson was found dead as an apparent victim of an accidental drowning. He backed up Joe Ferguson at QB for the Bills during the 1978 and 1979 season. Our Take: Another tragedy.
