Week 1: Terrible Team Performance In Blowout Loss
The team collectively acted like they didn't get off the plane.
by Steve Saslow

Here are our position by position grades:

Quarterback:

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three interceptions long before halftime. He was just way off the mark. He padded his stats later in the game during garbage time to make them look decent but he was awful.
Grade F: Embarrassing performance by Fitz.

Running Backs:

Fred Jackson wasn't doing much before leaving with a knee injury.
C.J. Spiller was the only player to show up as he had a 56 yard TD run and a 49 yard run. He did fumble the ball away after one of his two receptions. 194 total yards was awesome.
Tashard Choice had four carries in garbage time and couldn't get in the end zone on the goal line.
Grade A-: Spiller is a rising star.

Receivers:

Stevie Johnson was hampered by a groin injury and didn't do much against Revis but did have a garbage 29 yard TD after Revis left the game.
Donald Jones led the team with five catches and had a garbage time TD of his own.
David Nelson only had two catches before leaving the game with a knee injury.
Scott Chandler had four catches including a touchdown.
Lee Smith caught the only pass thrown his way to convert a third down.
Grade D: Had no separation from this unit.

Offensive Line:

Eric Wood seemed to make it through the game ok as he comes back from a torn ACL.
Cordy Glenn got called for one holding penalty but held up well.
Chris Hairston split time with Pears at right tackle.
Erik Pears played on a limited basis but seemed ok.
Grade B: No sacks given up and a 7.5 yard average on running plays.

Defensive Line:

Mario Williams had just one tackle and only sniffed Sanchez once. He was blaming non calls for hands to the face by the refs.
Marcell Dareus was very quiet with just one tackle.
Kyle Williams was pretty quiet with just three tackles.
Mark Anderson had one pressure on Sanchez to force an incompletion.
Chris Kelsay had one good pressure chasing Sanchez to throw it away.
Spencer Johnson had three tackles.
Grade F: So much for the best DL in football. Little pressure, no sacks.

Linebackers:

Nick Barnett led the way with nine tackles.
Kelvin Sheppard had eight tackles of his own.
Arthur Moats played well with six tackles.
Bryan Scott had an interception on the Jets first possession.
Grade C: This unit was active and kept the Jets running attack at bay most of the game.

Secondary:

Stephon Gilmore was beaten for a score when he fell for the pump fake.
Aaron Williams was called for a pass interference penalty and beaten a few teams.
Leodis McKelvin was beaten for a score when he had good position.
Terrence McGee had a tackle in minimal play.
Jairus Byrd was beaten for a near touchdown and had five tackles.
George Wilson had a quiet five tackles.
Da'Norris Searcy played in a safety rotation and had two tackles.
Grade F: Guys were running wide open all game.

Special Teams:

Brian Moorman punted just twice, a 44 yarder and a 37 yarder.
Rian Lindell hit all four extra points and didn't attempt a field goal.
John Potter had three touchbacks in four kicks but couldn't execute an onside kick.
Leodis McKelvin had one punt return for 27 yards and averaged 23.7 yards on three kickoff returns.
Coverage Units allowed a punt return for a score from 68 yards away. They allowed 24 yards on the one kickoff return.
Grade F: Added to the misery by giving up a touchdown.

Coaching:

Chan Gailey was once again outcoached by Rex Ryan. He has never beaten the Jets and didn't have the team ready. Should have tried more of a power running attack but is in love with the spread offense even when it's not working.
Dave Wannstedt had a disappointing debut as the team's defensive coordinator. The team got no pass rush and allowed guys to be wide open in the backfield. The run defense was solid.
Bruce DeHaven must be livid after the Jets had their first punt return for a score in 10 years.
Grade F: The team wasn't ready for a big opener.
